I'd only suggest buying a bike 'sight-unseen' if it is a known brand-name, and you know enough about components and sizing to evaluate it for yourself.
Also only if you are capable and willing to do basic repairs and 'tune-up' yourself.
Perhaps contact local clubs to find a used bike that you can actually see, and discuss with the current owner.
Used bikes can run the gamut from terrible to wonderful - buyer beware....
