Hi All
My Sons Giant is getting a little tired in the in the drive train, the rear Alivio mech has a lot of play in it, the chain is really worn, I have a s/h Shimano XT 7 speed rear mech the cable run all looks the same, I take it the mounting bolt is the same on them both and the only thing I can see that is different is the XT jockey wheels are smaller so would I need to make the new chain shorter to suit?
What I'm thinking of doing is replacing the cassette, chain and rear mech, the gears are working at the moment but are very worn, is there anything else I need to look at?
By the way all a bit new to me the working on mountain bikes.
Thanks for any help.

The rear mech is irrelevent in terms of chain length. You set chain length by measuring around the big/big cogs front and rear, without threading the chain through the mech, and then adding two links.
If everything is really worn you will need to replace the rear cassette, chain and front chain ring as a set otherwise you will have problems.0
