Are you sure its a 6am start?! Never used to be. I have taken the train back from Gatwick before (got a lift there in the morning). There should be non-Gatwick Express options as well, maybe get one of the trains from East Croydon, either by getting a connecting train or cycling there (depending where you are riding in from) - there should be no issue taking a bike on those trains.0

Yep start for the long ride is 6-8 bit of a pain I know.
Yes that is an option but they will be slower trains, still can look into that.
