Change the display before you go out and ride and realise it's showing data you don't want rather than data you do want.
Get an out front mount I use one of these: http://www.designcycles.net/products.htm
Turn it on a couple of minutes before you leave the house to avoid waiting for a signal.
If you're using Strava don't forget to set up Privacy Zones.
When you get back and have uploaded to Strava have a look at your data on this: http://labs.strava.com/flyby/viewer/I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0 -

No no no no no! Don't get an out front mount until you have used the standard mount for long enough to decide you need an out front mount! It's not a given.
I've done 30,000 miles or so without an out front mount and never once felt I needed one! Need is really down to personal geometry, flexibility, eyesight and, 95% fashion! If you don't care about the latter, you probably don't need an out front mount.
Curious that the 500s seem to take a long time to pick up a signal. I have various Bryton units and the signal pick up time seems to be proprortional to the size of the unit! The smaller the unit, the quicker the pick up. My very small Bryton 20 is switch on and go!Faster than a tent.......0 -
Picks up almost immediately if I start from my front door which is 99% of my rides. Elsewhere takes longer0

I tried to kill it by using a Sportive and selecting all riders, it coped admirably.I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0 -
If it powers down when out due to a cake stop etc give it a minute or so to adjust otherwise it will mess up your altitude
Set an elevation point from your house. Your climbing will be more accurate
I've never bothered with a bar mount. The standard fixings are fine for me0 -
Don't always rely on the manual to tell you how to do things... Not garmins finest hour IMO ... Plenty of stuff on the net and scarletfire is a mine of info0

They come with a manual?I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0 -
Having used the standard mount and now swapped to an out-front mount, I find the latter so much nicer. When bombing down decents, tucked down on the drops, I can read the display with a very small flick down with my eyes. It's also in a much better viewing position when I'm using my clip-on TT bars. Well worth it in my opinion.0

Cheers Guys, the switch on 5mins before is a grey tip.
Not sure on out front but being gadget orientated it will be inevitable, but have to say happy so far with the standard bar fitting.0 -
I find it takes longer to pick up the signal in areas with very tall buildings around, so its a bit like the early car gps sat navs, so I usually power it up first and by the time Ive unlocked the bike, set everything up to go and pushed out the bike shed its ready to go.0

If you use strava and want to keep all activities in there then use http://www.copymysports.com to copy from garmin connect into strava.
It suppose to do it automatically once you have set it up, but it's never worked for me so I just do it manually each time.0 -
When I have plugged mine into mac for data transfer I have to click on the eject icon (safely remove hardware on pc) after upload (but still leave physically connected to charge) otherwise after a while it thinks I have disconnected the cable without ejecting first (even f I have not touched it) and I get the warning message about not disconnecting properly.
Either that or I just use mac for transfer only and charge via a normal mains usb adapter.
If you use uploaded routes I prefer to scroll to the page that lists all the turns with distance to each turn.
It often beeps and says 'off course' but then quickly beeps again and says 'course found' if you are actually on the right course.0 -
Make sure you have distance on the main screen. If you only have instantaneous things like speed, hr, cadence etc on, then if you inadvertently forget to start recording, there'll be nothing obvious to give it away!Faster than a tent.......0

I actually wish Garmin would make a selectable data field that just shows you whether you are recording data or not.0
-
I wish that when I've stopped for a break, or to navigate an obstacle (e.g. closed gate) and press stop/pause on my garmin that it would automatically start recording again if it detects it's been moved more than say 20 meters. Even with the "display movement detected" alert turned on to remind me to resume there are still times where I've not noticed until I'm a few miles down the road. Sods law usually indicates that it usually happens at the point in the ride you're most interested in.0
-
can't you just use the auto start / stop feature?
and with the notification, turn on the noise so that you get a weird beep when it is detectedGetting up is the second hardest thing in the morning0 -
My out-front mount was one of the best things I ever bought for my bike, let alone the Garmin!
+'s
1. Looks much neater
2. More aero
3. Puts the garmin right in your line of vision

Brytons do have an indicator that shows that they are recording but it isn't that big and it's easy not to notice if it isn't there. I just make sure I have distance showing and as soon as I reach 0.01 miles I know it's recording!bernithebiker wrote:My out-front mount was one of the best things I ever bought for my bike, let alone the Garmin!

Funnily enough, it is the clunkiness of the appearance of out front mounts that puts me off them!Faster than a tent.......0 -
Clunky?
If this is clunky, then I'm a funky monkey…

An out-front mount just makes it so much easier to view the display when on the move. You barely have to take your eyes off the road. These pics are of my bike with clip-on TT bars fitted and you can clearly see how much further down you've got to look if the Garmin was fitted to the stem, which isn't ideal when you're doing 20mph+.

Can you set up a 500 so the display doesn't tell you in real time how many metres you have climbed but instead tells you in real time what percentage gradient you are on ?This serious internet site..............I serious cat0
