Doubt it will make a decent all round mountain bike, and even worse as a commuter, unless your commute is round the block.
Whether it's worth upgrading depends on what, if anything needs upgrading.I don't do smileys.

Sorry, but you got what you paid for.
Its old and probably V tired.
For a plod around a cycle path it will be ok.
A commute for work? how far you going? more than a slow mile or two, forget it unless you like lot of effort with little reward.
All in better than walking, but time has moved on.
New cable maybe, but when you start adding up possibles like Bottom Brackets, chains and cassettes, might be worth reselling on Ebay and buying something new. Even a £200 bike from Halfords might be better. If your not going off road, don't waste your money on a suspension bike. Go for a Hybrid like Boardman. Will still handle cycle routes and get you to work a lot easier and more reliably.
This could be an ugly money pit.Chinese All Carbon Hybrid, mixed with overdraft and research.

Bit harsh. I would think someone paying £50.00 isn't able to go out and buy a nice boardman hybrid.
As long as you don't go mad fixing it up there's no reason it won't do what you want from it. If you decide biking is for you then you could consider changing it after a while and still get your money back .0 -
Nowt wrong with the Voltage/YZ's, my daughters both used a Voltage frame for an MTB (both used it round cannock and Hicks a few times), the elder had it first and the younger second (still does), they make a perfectly good MTB as long as they fit you (they are a bit short), it's not really a jump bike.
£45 isn't a bad price either for what you've got there, properly advertised I've seen them sell in reasonable nick for upto £100.
I'd focus on getting the fit right for you, making sure it's all running as it should and go from there, if the tyres have had it then you could consider some less knobbly ones for using on the road.
That colour scheme is one of the later one's, it looks clean so the bike could be in very good condition, 2010 I think. Forks have either been changed as I can't find that paint scheme frame with anything but white ones and the front brake is a black calliper instead of white http://www.evanscycles.com/products/sco ... 8#features
Ignore Francis, I think he's made a bit of an ass of himself with those comments. It's not old, it may not be that tired, if it fits it will be fine for commuting, it was a £400 bike in it's day so no reason why the components should all be worn out at all.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Hi yes the bike is 2010 model it as been confirmed by Scott direct cause that orange was only on the 2010 models I have just payed for the bike servicing and the only thing that wanted doing was the gears set up and some adjusting on the brakes the bloke in the shop was so surprised how good the condition was everything is perfect on it and yes I can afford to buy new bikes but I don't see the point in spending stupid for me not to get into biking that's why I got the Scott MTB cheap and every one I have shown said the person who sold it to me must have been desperate for money to let it go cheap and yeah its a perfect for according to bike shop when I took it for a service0

A very good buy then...nice, as long as it's long enough for you it will be fine for commuting.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
