I am doing the Marmotte and need to change my gearing as I currently have a 12-25 with a 50/34. I see that the official spec for the 7970 rd is for a max 27t sprocket. Does anyone know if this is really the case in practice? I am sure it will definitely not go higher than 28 which is not a massive difference from 27 but when I am grovelling up alp d'Huez I am sure I will be grateful for any help!

Mine runs with a 28 no problems. Haven't tried it on anything larger !

Why not just buy a cheap Tiagra 12-30 and give it a go to see if it will work.

They only cost about £15 so not a great loss if it doesn't - and you can always flog it on here in it's nearly new state.

Keep the 25 and just lay off the pies for the next two months :D
    Red bikes are the fastest.

I think a multi-pronged approach will be needed. Pies and gears!
