Sram shifter compatability

I want to upgrade the shifters on my bike. I've got sram Apex at present, so if I kept the apex derailleurs can I use Rival or Force shifters? Also is it worth trying to upgrade??

    Yes 10 speed for 10 speed so don't go splashing out on Force 22 or Red 22.
    I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
