Hello,
I am the newly proud owner of a Garmin Edge 500 with HR and cadence sensors and have used it for 2 rides now.

I have tried to download the Garmin Windows application which allows rides to be uploaded and linked to Strava etc, however there is an internet block on downloading the tool as it's a work laptop. I've sent a request for this to be removed off, but if they refuse / in the mean time I was wondering if anyone knows of anything else I can do to upload my rides? I have my laptop, iPhone and iPad at my disposal.

This is the 500 not the 510 so the Garmin app for iPad / iPhone doesn't work.

Thank you

you don't need the Garmin windows app - you do need the garmin web browser plug-in though.

You can also upload your rides direct from file with the device plugged in to a USB port it appears as a drive (again, drivers needed).

Plug the Garmin into the computer. Wait for it to be recognised. Open up Windows Explorer and find the Garmin in the drive tree. Navigate the Garmin folders and find the Activities folder. In there should be the log files for your rides. Copy them off the device (or not) and use the manual upload option in Strava etc. No extra software needed.

I always use the manual upload option with my 800. This is because I log the rides to the SD card so the auto options don't work and I copy all the rides to my computer anyway so they get backed up. It also means if I want to use another service I don't need the Garmin plugged in to upload past rides.

Thanks for the replies - used the manual upload function (after upgrading the Explorer with work's permission!).

Quick question if you please - when a Garmin is reset using the lap/reset function on the side, will previous ride information be retained? Or should I move the ride onto Strava before resetting?

    Thank you

When you finish a ride hold down the lap/reset button until the countdown finishes. This properly saves the ride to the log file and the information on the screen is reset. The log files are not deleted and are ready for uploading to Strava etc.
