Single Speed - Build or Buy

Morning,

I am looking to get a single speed bike that I can use to nip about on and take out with the kids when they are on their bikes.

I want to keep it as a budget bike £200 / £300 so I won’t get upset if it gets damaged / stolen etc.

Has anyone got any idea or links that are worth a look at? Not sure if I am best just picking up a cheap single speed or getting the parts separate to build my own.

I tried to search but couldn’t find many answers so any help would be much appreciated.

Neil.

    For that budget I would look at the Merlin Single Malt;

    Buy a second hander. Plenty of langsters, charge plugs etc. around. Look on eBay or lfgss.

    Or go a slightly different route and try the Vitus Vee1 single-speed. I have the 29er version, and at the risk of repeating myself (repeating myself) its about the best fun you can have on a bike for less than 300 quid. Chain Reaction are the retailers.....

    I've always had half and eye on that bike when it was a 26er with rim brakes. As a 29er with discs it looks even more interesting. I managed to get a secondhand Specialized Singlecross (factory built singlespeed version of the older Tricross). Can run single speed or fixed and can take up to 38mm tyres so good as an multi-surface 'crosser (also fixings for both mudguards and racks front and rear). A real Swiss-army style bike and dang comfortable to ride too. One of the single best things I ever bought...still a few about on ebay if you look.
    Titus Silk Road Ti rigid 29er - Scott Solace 10 disc - Kinesis Crosslight Pro6 disc - Scott CR1 SL - Pinnacle Arkose X 650b - Pinnacle Arkose singlespeed - Specialized Singlecross...& an Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 4 string...
  • I'm always a fan of working on my own projects, rather than just buying something stock. Single speeds are so easy/cheap to build that it's quite cheap to build your own using second hand parts. I've got a few second hand parts I could sell on that are for single speed. If you drop me a PM if interested i'll send you some info.

    I had a Genesis flyer for a while, bought new...it was great but I always had the feeling I could have gotten the same ride experience on something cheaper that I'd built up myself.
    Build, I say.

    I have been looking over eBay but I still can't decide, don't want to rush in and get something I don't like or will regret.

    Build :D

    It took me a couple of months of looking for a fixie frame that was reasonably cheap.I finally got an old steel frame one from the local Bike Station for £30. It was missing a few bits which i can get when i go back there (only had £30 on me at the time :D) I'll strip it down, clean it up as best as i can and make sure its running properly. It's got a bit of bit of rust on it, but for cycling around the local park with my kids and dogs I can't complain. It will cost me around another £30, looking at how much they charge for parts, to fix it up.
