Insurance

My house insurance has a limit of 2k per bike so unfortunately it won't cover my pride and joy.

Changing provided isn't an option as we live in a flood risk area and getting cover at all is difficult.

So what specialist insurers do you guys have experience of and recommend?

I actually need to cover 2 bikes, a 2012 Felt DA2, bought last year, value of £4000 and a self built 2012 Cervelo R5 with DA 7900 which I would value at 3.5k.

How do these insurers handle self built bikes (i.e. built up from a secondhand frameset and components)?

  • I'm with ETA and I'm currently going through a claim with so will report back how that goes on.
But so far very impressed with their comprehensive cover esp in regards to race cover.

I've just insured with John Lewis. Under £400 (£80 of which was added to include 2 bikes value £3k + £900). 3bed semi in NW London. I thought was a good price.

Can your current insurer not just add the bike as a special listed item on the house insurance for a slight increase in the annual premium? That's how my insurance works, by default it only covers items up to a certain value but you can include more valuable items if you tell them and pay the extra.

I just use my bank 'Santander' they have no limit on the bikes or anything else. I have two bikes plus contents insurance and away from home items coverd for £16pm

I phoned my home insurance company and added the bike as a separate item. It cost £30 for the year for £1500 of cover and covers me for theft from or away from home, and accidental damage including crashes. The only stipulation is that if the bike is left anywhere it is secured with a minimum of a silver secure lock.

I didn't realise you could get accidental crash damage, that's good news.

  • Even when listed as special items the limit for bikes is 2k each with our home insurer. As we live in a flood risk area and have cover with no flood exclusions changing home insurer isn't an option. I have to go with a cycle insurance policy, so any other recommendations?

This is easily solved, go with the house insurance after all but list the Groupsets as Fishing Tackle and you should be fine.

Very good point! Which one of "2 bikes, a 2012 Felt DA2, bought last year, value of £4000 and a self built 2012 Cervelo R5 with DA 7900 which I would value at 3.5k" do you mean?
