Looking for advice on a 700 x 32 tyre for tarmac commute. Wanted something more comfortable than existing 28mm Conti GP4-season. For use on CX bike. Some days I have very heavy panniers and like the confidence of a 32 or 35mm tyre.

Are these any good?

Schwalbe Marathon Supreme - sound very impressive and I guess they will be very robust. Not overly heavy

    700 x 32mm - 375g folding
    700 x 35mm - 440g folding.
They are quite expensive though £38 per tyre

The only other cheaper consideration I can think of is Conti Gatorskins

    700 x 32mm - 325g folding, £27 per tyre
    700 x 32mm - 365g wired, £21 per tyre

I've run 32c Specialized Boroughs on my Cross bikefor a few years now and they are great. Not the cheapest tyre on the market and I did split the side-casing on my first pair a few years ago, but since then they have never given me cause to complain and are really great on road and mixed-terrain riding, like towpaths and trails etc.

After going through several tyres choices for my CX (Marathons and racing Ralphs) I have settled on 35mm Schwalbe Land Cruisers.

They have a nice central bead for tarmac work, and good side grip for towpath and bridleway work.
  • Put this on a thread above about tyres. Also consider these:

Tough tyres, not the lightest but for commuting I value durability. Good value too.

I use 28mm supremes on my CX commuter, quite pricey but excellent and grip, on some shocking London roads.

I sometimes use 32mm Conti top touring for a good compromise between off-road grip and on-road smoothness. Not that heavy too - some of the Marathons weigh a tonne...

Another vote for the Marathon Supreme, I use them for commuting in 32mm and they are superb in all weathers and temperatures, light, strong and comfortable - they are nothing like any other Marathon tyre. In my opinion the only better tyre of this type is the Vittoria Voyager Hyper but they come up very large and wouldn't clear my mudguards.
