hub compatibility

I have Shimano 7 speed on 125mm spacing. All hubs even 7 speed are at least 130mm. Could I screw a 7 speed free hub into a modern 8 speed hub and chop the axel. My Mavic hub with screw on block will work but needs readjusting each time I put it in the bike. But does index once set up. I am considering redishing the wheel and using washers to recentralise . Any one got some experience or tips.

Freehubs aren't universal fitting - I struggled to get a replacement for a 2006 Shimano hub recently. You can adapt a modern hub - remove a spacer and redish.
