Frameset for £1000

Hi,
I'm looking at upgrading my bike, but I'm more than happy to move my groupset (Shimano 105) & kit onto a new frame. Unfortunately I'm tied down to a £1k budget and can't go over it under any circumstances. I've got a Giant Defy 1 (2014) at the moment and I didn't know how much value I'll get from a frame upgrade. In terms of kit upgrades I'm willing to upgrade as I go on a new frame and move old stuff back to the old frame.
Thanks

Complete bikes around for 1K with new 6800 Ultegra - will be a nice upgrade to your current ride.
Have a look at Ribble and Planet X..............0 -
I take it that you are looking at CF for your frame upgrade? There is an article in CW April 17, 2014 complete bikes at the £1000.00 price point, however if you want to spend all that on frame/forks, look at what is on offer from the various manufactures. Only you can judge how much of a difference a frame/fork change will make/be.
Try and get a test ride on the bikes with the frames you are interested in.0 -
Some interesting frame options at planet x I always thought - not just their own branded stuff.
Depends what you are after - what's wrong the the defy? If you just want to go a bit faster I reckon you might be better spending your cash on wheels.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0 -
I was mainly looking at future upgrade potential with a new frameset, so it is purely a case of what is the best frameset I can get within my budget. Any upgrades will be to the new frame & old kit will go back to the Defy frame which will eventually become a winter bike.
Thanks for the advice so far, I've looked at the Planet X website & Ribble websites which have some interesting options. In terms of material of the frame I haven't got any preference, if an Aluminum frame outperforms any CF frame in the price bracket then I'm happy to go with that. I've looked at the Cannondale CAAD10 frameset on Sigma Sport, but is it the best Aluminum frame out there?0 -
You haven't said what sort of riding you do.
If you spend £1k on a frameset and want to move some of the equipment cross you may find some compatibility issues - lots of frames in that bracket may come with BB30 rather than a standard bottom bracket, so you maybe looking at a couple of hundred for a new chainset/BB before you start. If you spend £1k on a frame and stick 105 on it you're slightly dressing mutton as lamb in the sense that you may have a frameset that 'deserves' better than 105.
The PX/Ribble alternatives will give you a really good frame and equipment, and will be an upgrade that you will definitely notice. The bike will be maybe 3 kilos lighter than the defy. You would also have a 2nd bike in the defy straight away with a possible future wheel upgrade.
Another option could be a Dolan, or a the Rose reviewed on BR a few days ago.0 -
The Defy has a Shimano press fit bottom bracket.
I mainly go for climbs in the local area although looking at regular trips to the Yorkshire Dales to change scenery. I'm looking at entering sportives more often including one in June that includes 5000ft of climbing in 85 miles which is mainly short sharp climbs.0 -
I'd look to split the £1k between a new frame and wheelsMake mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Please show us which bikes you mean.
Can see that Ribble will do you a bike with 6800 for under a grand- except it's based around a cheap alloy frame .
Hardly an upgrade to OP's Defy 1.
Also Planet X SL PRO @ £999 has the old 6700 10 speed. And how old is that frame now? I would say AT LEAST 5 or 6 years old so hardly state of the art.0 -
Check out Dolan frames. They have a website and a full carbon frame can be had in your budget. The frames are pro team proven and highly regarded I understand and more than worthy of future upgrades. You will be able to use your current chainset with an inexpensive adapter. Worth a look.0

You could always do what I did for my latest second bike. I bought a Wilier GTR Veloce as a complete bike. Stripped it down to leave just the frameset and fitted all my own components. The Veloce groupset, Miche wheels and FSA peripherals etc I sold off for £400 leaving me a bill of £1,000 for the frameset. A Wilier GTR frameset was £1,300 retail against the £1,400 for the Veloce kitted complete bike. You don't necessarily need to look at Wilier, but do look at complete bikes and what you can get by selling all the kit on it to leave yourself with the frame you want at the right price.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0 -
Look for a higher end s/h frame in great condition.0

What size is your current Defy frame?0

Or he could use a hollowtech to BB30 adaptor.

get on to westbrook cycles and get one of the closeout 2012 scott foil framesets, and add another 400 and get full ultegra di2 with it.0

If you like the geometry of the Defy then why not try the Felt, they do a Z1 frameset that I think may be higher spec (1k nano carbon) than their standard Z frames (3k UHC), comes in a little over your budget but may be worth it :-

Good thing about this is it will take mechanical or Di2 gears (both internal), but has BB30 so you need to factor in a BB30 to Std adaptor for £25-60. You may also need a new thinner seat post and some gear/brake cables.
Quick question, well something my better half would typically ask me, if you have a 2014 bike, why are you upgrading already, surely you haven't had that too long yet!!
I have a Defy 0 and a Z3 and love both, for some reason I like the feel of the Defy more, feels more direct / snappy and makes me smile for some strange reason, despite the geometry being virtually the same and the Felt being worth 3 times the Defy. :roll:0
