Time to go out and thrash em, crash em and bash em. Only thing I would add is get some protection on the chain stays even if you have clutch mechs the chain can jump off and put gouges in the frame.

no the boadman is a lot lighter and better finished off, the boardman looks like a carbon with the smooth welds, the boardman has more triangle shaped tubing and the voodoo is round tubing

the only 2 things left on both bikes that came with them when bought new are the wheels and frame the rest I changed (too much spare time and cash burning a hole in my pocket) I was going to go the full sus'er way but for some reason they don't do it for me

You should have got your son to help with the building, perhaps he would have been motivated to ride the bike if he was involved in the building.

Show him some videos of Red Bull Rampage, if that doesn't make you want to ride then i don't know what will (Just avoid the clips of crashes).

Turn off the broadband router, job done!

And put a padlock on the fridge.

Seriously, though, if he showed no interest at the build stage it's no surprise that he's not interested in riding. Power to you for trying to do the right thing, but I suspect you've got quite a task on your hands. But if you can find a way of getting him through the first few months he'll probably start to find it addictive (especially once he starts to see results, physically), so don't give up too easily. Maybe give him the better of the two bikes. That might be one small incentive. Also, if he's a computer guy, have a dig around for the various apps that link to cycling (strava's the first thing that springs to mind) so that you're starting to relate the cycling to something that he's comfortable with.

  • Hi - I have a Voodoo too - Could I ask what upgrades you did to your Son's bike?

Did you stick with the standard brakes and crankset?

    Thanks!

He is more interested in gaming? tut tut. I once was too. (i am also 17 btw) Then i realised that Call of Duty made my blood boil, and bikes are awesome and fun.

Just force him to come out on a ride with you one day, and take him somewhere really nice to ride and he may really enjoy it.

Also try having a serious sit down with him and explain to him that he should be trying to lose weight, and you really want him to take up cycling to really get into shape.

I wouldn't worry. I had over 450 views and just 3 comments recently!

Nice bikes though. Keep working on it. Father and son MTB rides are cool. I did them with my dad in the late 80's and do them with my son now.

I had the same thing except it was the other way round, i took it up properly last summer and lost a few stone, and then just after christmas i wanted my dad to do some well as he was 6ft4 and 20st, he was previously extremely fit when he was in the army but he's put on a few pounds over the years. So i looked at lots of bikes with him, told him about all the specs and what is good and whats not, and all the way he was completely involved in choosing his bike. Now we ride every weekend locally and at Trail Centers. He used to get loads of back pain but now thats completely gone and he;'s lost about a stone already! I was just always really persistent in getting him to talk to me about bikes and in the end he got addicted!

That's what got me into mtb

Went to Cannock on an Spesh Hardtail I was planning to use on roads/very light off road
Rode the monkey trail, very slowly, but I've been hooked since

What I dont get is why you spent so much and put so much effort into changing his bike, if he wasnt riding it? Lesson to others here - get them riding first and THEN change the bike if necessary (much less annoying and cheaper if they dont take it up).

Eh, both makes are totally independent of Halfords, it's just both have a sales agreement with Halfords. That said both have their frames made by Merida and that is more likely the source of any commonality. (Merida also make Carrera, Pinnacle, I believe the Hoy's as well as most Specialized).
