So for the past year I have been into road cycling and my first bike was just a carrera subway ltd 2013 from halfords.

I am really interested in starting mountain and trail biking and so I'm looking to buy a bike, my budget is roughly £600.

I have looked at a lot of the advice on this forum and I very much like the look of the Trek X-Caliber 7 29er 2014. I haven't seen many people talking about it on bike radar so I am wondering what peoples opinions of it are. Like I said I am new to the sport so don't know all that much when it comes to specs. It 'looks' great though, I know that

As I also want to still be able to go road biking with my local cycling group I was thinking about buying a hardtail with lock out front suspension, then I could switch out the mtb wheels with more suitable road tires when I needed to. The only thing is I dont know how viable this is with 29" wheels as oppose to the standard 26" wheels. Most of the recommendations on here seem to be 29ers and I haven't really seen any 26"ers which people like at this price range.

Other bikes which I have also considered are below but my heart right now is with the Trek:

B'twin rockrider 8.1 http://www.decathlon.co.uk/rockrider-81 ... 68918.html

(out-of range but w/e) on-one http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/CBOO45650BD ... ntain-bike

I am 21, 6 ft 2", looking at a 20-21" frame

maybe it is unreasonable to have one bike suitable for both disciplines, if I had to choose I want a solid trail bike over a road bike. Maybe the better idea is to have two separate bikes for each thing but obviously £££!
