Well might be bad luck but had my first spoke break on the rear whilst 20 miles away from home on Friday. In summary low spoke count, close clearance frame=phone the team car :? Anyhoo, Evans appear to stock plenty spares for these wheelsets, is it just my bad luck ? Replacement spokes will not be here till at least mid week so back on the fixie now. Is it worth chucking it into my local wheel builder and ask them to check the tensions on both front and back ? Will replace the broken spoke myself and see how true it is. Only done 300 odd miles on these wheels but I dare say this last week I've been on some roads that are terrible but have avoided the craters! They had been as straight as die both front and rear uptil Friday, I assume they are in quite a high tension or should be being low spoke count!

Were did it break? flange would mean fatigue so yes check tension enure they are even and DS rear is 1200N. If it is a nipple it could mean residual spoke twist or there is a a bend in the spoke at the nipple. If it the later they will just keep on breaking.

As a temporary replacement you can use any spoke. Tension needs to be checked. Ultimately, these are budget spokes

It broke at the nipped. As for budget spokes £2 a pop us not in my book budget spokes! In fact I think for general purpose something with more spokes will be my next wheelset

That's the price they charge, which doesn't mean anything... I am not aware of any western manufacturer that makes these 3.2 wide black flat spokes... hence they are asian spokes. PIllar (P on the spoke head) and CN (m on the spoke head) are the least worst among those, but they're not particularly good

fair enough, might get someone to check tension as I have no means to measure. Out of interest at 95kg, I take it I`m maybe on border line with these ? Also been browsing and I could possibly get something homebuilt with Hope hubs and Mavic pro rims for under £300. I reckon they would be pretty bomb proof!

Breaking at the nipple has me worried. If there is a bend in the spoke as it meets the nipple this is a stress raiser and where one has broken others will probably follow. Then again I may be wrong. Fit a round sapim race spoke or anything and see how you go if more break then you know it is time to say goodbye to them.

the Open Pro is a decent rim but it is not the stiffest. the Archetype rim is better rim in many ways it does depend on what you want from the wheels. nowt wrong with "narrow" rims so don't discount them.

Open PRO on Hope 32 spokes is a good set of wheels, but at that price I suspect corners will be cut. The combined cost of the components is over 300 pounds (with sapim spokes)... so a bespoke set would come closer to 400 pounds than to 300. Pay what is right and get them built properly by a respected builder, or they'll be just as bad. Buy cheap, buy twice
