Seatpost length

Hi all I have today just taken delivery of a fantastic new dolan lEtape, when I ordered it I told the guys the size of my then current bike, a cube peloton pro in a large 56cm this size was always a bit of a stretch for me as I am only 5'8" but have an instep of 32" which is longer than average for my height. They recommended the medium size rather than the large with a 350mm seat post.
Took the bike out today with the seat height set at the min insertion line (had the stem flipped over with 30mm of spacers under the stem and was super comfy) but I could do with an extra 5-10mm of height, so I am asking that is it best to get a 400mm seatpost and not risk the the post sticking out that far with so little inserted or would I get away with it. Cheers all

As its a new bike, do you think there is any chance of getting it replaced FOC - especially if you say you asked their advise and it was wrong (regardless of whether it was wrong or not).

Personally I like to listen to safety advise especially as you may find yourself going >35mph downhill. I need confidence in every part of the bike from the tyres, to the wheels to frame, to stem, to handlebars to the seat. The last thing I'd want is the seat post snapping on me which could cause physical and/or financial damage to me.
  • I think the size is ok but the seatpost is too short coz I'm a bit of an odd shape I don't mind changing it, or are you saying that I should return it regardless even though I done 40 miles at 20.5mph average on it today and already replaced the bar tape and fitted my pro4 tyres and fizik seat so don't think they would take it back anyway. (Don't really want to return it).
I think I'm kind of between sizes I need a medium frame for my top half but a large for my lower half like I said the bike was fine and comfortable just worried about the seatpost sticking out too far, there's some Richey ones on the bay for £23 comp and pro are they a good price.
  • I think he meant that since they advised you on the seat post length ask them if you can swap the seat posts since it feels too short.
  • Dolan don't list a 400mm seatpost on there website only an aero TT one, have bought the Richey one of the evil bay now so sod it, not too.worried as the alpina one off the dolan can replace the crappy one on my single speed,
  • I'm a bloody idiot! Just measured the seatpost that dolan fitted and it's not the 350mm I specified it's the 300 so I'm ok just got to sort it out with dolan on Tuesday (and cancel the one I bought on eBay doh) just goes to prove that you shouldn't assume anything and check first before you make any rash decisions.
  • Definitely do not pay yourself to replace the seat post, if they advised you in the first place I wouldn't have been doing anything myself.

At least you caught it before other things were shipped out! Best of luck.
