Ribble R872 Campag build

So, after two years of procrastinating, bidding on second hand frames, looking at B2W schemes, debating on spending a fortune, I finally plumped for one of the beginning of year clearance frames from Ribble and built this one:
Started out wondering if I could get a sub 7kg, sub £1000 build, but ended up at 7.08kg (ex pedals) and £1180! Spec as below:
Being as the frame is advertised at 980g and weighed in at about over 200g heavier, it does make me wonder if a sub 7kg, sub £1000 build is possible using all new bits?

Looks nice. I guess Ribble are quoting the weight for their smallest frame, hence the difference. Wish I could pick up a chorus chainset for £600

Ah yes - The chainset was 2nd hand! Pedals reused and tyres were a freebie with some Pro4s! Agree they will be quoting a smaller frame (48cm compared to my 50cm), but 20%?!0

Maybe a very slight rotation upwards of the bars and levelling of the seat but apart from that very cool. Chuck on some deep rims and it'll rock.Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

Like the red touches on the saddle. Not so sure about the bar tape. Mind you, mine is boring black so not fair to criticize. have some 38mm carbons coming, will post up a pic when they get here. Completes my build, finished bike should be around 8kg inc pedals. Most of that extra weight will be in the 105 group set. Certainly not in the wheels!0

Well, your tyres and tubes are quite lardy so you can save some weight cheaply there (more if you go tubular) but I found that weight saving for the most part costs between £0.50 and well over £2.50 a gram and that only if you patiently wait for the bargains. So even if you could save all your 400g or so at tyre and inner tube rates (which of course you can't) it would still cost £200. But in reality you might be paying four times that amount.
So no, you probably can't buy a Canyon Ultimate CF SLX for under £1k!Faster than a tent.......0 -
Tyres were certainly on the list for when they wear out (I had them lying around for this one). I was meaning for a 7kg excluding pedals (i.e. as all the manufacturers claim). A centaur groupset maybe and cheaper wheels might be offset by the 200g frame 'growth'? I'd be interested if anyone has done it.0

My 782 comes in at just under 7kg (6.97kg) with Ultegra Groupset, Ness carbon integrated stem and bars, Ness Carbon seat post, Chinese carbon saddle and a set of Mavic R Sys SL's so it's possible to get under the 7kg but it's not cheap??0

Both in my experience. Rock solid when out of the saddle (compared to my mate's Giant which creaks and groans when he puts any power down) As long as you are flexible enough to ride with a 10cm drop from seat to bars or more then you will be fine with it but an upright sportive bike it aint. Did 60 miles on mine yesterday and 80 today so it is comfortable enough. Tyres and tyre pressure are the main contributors to comfort imo. Is any road bike really comfortable?0 -
So, first ride out on it this evening, and it flies. Not sure if it's the 2kg lighter overall, wheels, carbon frame, nice weather, a small beer at lunchtime or a combination of the lot! Felt a bit alien for the first few miles (as they all will), but then felt really comfy. A longer ride will be the real test, but the short climb acceleration and long drag climbs seemed to be where the real difference was felt.
Being as it replaces a Merckx Team SC, I'm really happy with it - certainly for the money....0
