Hey All,

Flew to Gran Canaria today for some riding but having an issue with my Garmin 800. I'm creating rides on Ridewithgps and putting the .tcx files in the "NewFiles" folder on the SD Card but they are not appearing as courses when I switch the Garmin on.

Before flying out, I installed a new SD card with Opensource maps for Italy & Gran Canaria. The maps are showing up on the 800 so the SD card isn't a dud. I've also tried putting the .tcx files into the "NewFiles" folder on the 800 itself but having the same problem.

Never had this problem before. Any help gratefully appreciated. This is doing my head in!!!!

EDIT: When I reconnect the 800 to the laptop, the .tcx file is no longer in the "NewFiles" folder and there is not a version in the "Courses" folder either.

    Use gpx,
    http://www.gpsies.com/convert.do?language=en

Make sure to set up the course on the garmin, courses, choose course, tool icon, turn guidance to on etc.

Thanks Freezing - that has fixed it.

Do you know why this problem has happened? I've always used .tcx files before with no issues. All I've done before coming to Gran Canaria is put in a different SD card! It doesn't make sense to me!!!
  • It may be loading them as training. I would try the gpx version and do it to the newfiles folder on the garmin itself.

Can't really help on the tcx issue as I have always used gpx to maintain functionality over a range of gps devices.
As the name implies gpx are non specific as regards devices and software. The same cannot be said for garmin tcx and fit files

I've tried both tcx and gpx export from RideWithGPS and on balance have had fewer issues with gpx files on my EDGE 800.

Would recommend following this blog post for getting turn-by-turn directions working properly:

...it's harder than it should be.

Try this. After saving the TCX file to "New Files" use out the 'Safely Remove Hardware' function to dismount the Garmin before unplugging it.
