I have posted before on where to go for a cycle/family holiday and got myself (and the good lady) all exited about going to Majorca, until I was informed that to go there in the kids summer holidays would be like cycling in hell !
So, where to go?
The brief is,
Family freindly
Warm
Hilly
cycle freindly
Cycle hire
Good value.

look forward to your help
regards

    My idea of Cycling heaven!
  • Morzine/Les Gets. Cant beat it. Great towns and great cycling (e.g. Col de Joux plan). Lots of nice chalets for hire.

If you want to get away from Brits abroad etc, I would go far South Languedoc-Roussillon in the South of France.

Lots of nice smooth roads up into the Pyrenees Mountains and along the beautiful coastline. Places like Argeles sur mer and Le Boulou. Perpignan is the largest town/city.

Went a couple years back and it was stunning. Good for cycling too. But its mainly where the French go and have holiday homes etc. Not built up and not tourist filled like many places.

This gets my vote too, absolutely fantastic place for a family holiday.

Watch out for being too far South in France in mid-summer. Not only can it get far too hot for comfortable cycling, but the nice bits get pretty damn busy as well.

Brittany has all of that in spades, apart from, possibly, No.2. Currently it's full sun and 21'C, and last summer was great, but I have also seen an August day at 17'C and raining!

Oi! OK, so it can get rather warm in the afternoon, but all the more reason to get out early, get in a few hours of cycling, and head back home for lunch and a siesta. You can then head back out early evening if you want to climb some of the big hills we've got.

And depends on where you go as to whether it's busy... it's possible to do stunning and still quiet, if you choose carefully (I'm biased)

I went to Port Pollenca a couple of years ago during the school holidays (last two weeks in August) and it was fine. hired a bike with probike hire with no problems (book before you fly) and they had excursions from their shop every couple of days. Had no problems with crowds or anything really.

Plus 1 for Brittany... And some excellent cycle friendly accomodation as well!
  • Try Osona region of Catalunya. Beautiful, quiet, loads of rural houses for rent with pools, close to Barcelona and Girona, 30 plus cat climbs, history, culture and very bike friendly.
