I hope the roads improve in the dales for the tour this year, as I live in the area and cycle the route on a regular basis. I seen a big decline in the roads with pot holes caused by the bad weather.

I wrecked several rims this year on rides out.

Haven't the main routes already got a fix? Seen one report with new surface and line painting.

Rest of the roads off route will be left to rot like the rest of the country. Lancs is the same. Some lanes are literally pealing apart.
The road maintenance budget should have been maintained once they knew about the damage of winters 09-12.
  • There seems to have been a lot of work done on the roads The Tour (my capitals!) will use this year and they are mostly in pretty good shape.

Sadly this seems to have left no budget for the rest of the roads in the county which are worse than ever!

There is a segment on Strava which is sort of in Yorkshire called Rochdale rd Roubix, I'm sure it should be called Roubaix but some div probably spelt it wrong.

Its the worst surface for a mile or so I've ridden in my short stint as a roadie and really needs resurfacing.

Top of Cragg Vale has been surfaced and all the pot holes on the way up are outlined to be tidied up.
    Advocate of disc brakes.

The council have been out resurfacing all the Tour roads round my way from Huddersfield through Holmfirth and over to Sheffield, loads of potholes repaired, ironworks levelled, new surfaces, we've been making the most of finally having some decent surfaces to roll on, but if you go off-route it's still a nightmare, really still suffering badly from the heavy winter and snowfall we had last March-April.
  • I saw plenty of yellow circles marking potholes around my area recently, and it's not even on the tour route. I'm excited!
  • The road from the bottom of Harewood bank, through to Arthington, Pool towards Otley is being repaired and resurfaced as we speak. It did need it !!

I find this very hard to believe.
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

If you 'cycle the route on a regular basis' you'd know the route roads certainly round here are in very good condition. you've wrecked several rims this year? ... hmmm

They've resurfaced parts of Mortimer Road(Strines) and Old Pensitone Road(High Bradfield) and Jaw-Bone Hill(Oughtibridge-Grenoside) is currently closed for resurfacing so Sheffield CC seem to be doing the right thing. The road Between Mortimer Road and High Bradfield is now one of the smoothest bit's of Tarmac in the area

In the last few weeks they have been resurfacing the A61 road finish to Stage 1 in Harrogate - they have also removed some of the small pedestrian islands in the middle of the road. They have also been working on the A59 in Harrogate which is part of the Stage 2 route.

Have they repainted the distance markers?

Cool! I rode up it Tues evening (15th) and the Holmfirth side was still waiting to be done, with the old distance markers intact. The first few hundred yards of the south side descent had a couple of really nasty subsidence bumps and negative cambers that might cause a tight peleton a few issues, hope that's finally been ironed out now.

That's nothing to do with the Tour, though. All Sheffield's roads are being done; about time too

New distance markers on cragg vale.
First time for me up Cragg vale this good Friday - what a cracking day and a great ride. Rode over the new km markings, didn't spot the 4km one, maybe I was just going so fast by then it was just a blur. Not. Ice cream van at the top was a nice touch.

You're assuming they'll actually do a decent job of fixing them. The usual procedure seems to be to fill the holes with gravel and slap a thin layer of tarmac on top. A month later (if not sooner) it just opens up again. Total waste of time.

...and money. Spend a little more, do the job properly. Drives me mad round Kirklees area, the potholes just keep multiplying as the old cheap patch jobs need redoing along with the new damage every year, it keeps getting worse and worse.
  • The problem with the UK is that they focus on short term savings rather than long term. It is evident across the board here, and that causes serious headaches for infrastructures.

You do tend to realise this is the approach they take to road repairs when you see them out patching the patches to the patches to the patches instead of doing the sensible thing and digging the whole thing up and resurfacing it properly.

hadnt one of the MPs in Essex, Bob Russell, complained that the county council had been out surveying and fixing every pothole theyd found on the TdF route, seemingly at the expense of fixing them elsewhere and his cunning plan was to invite the TdF to visit more parts of Essex to get them all fixed :D
