Taking a break from racing, as he's suffering heart problem and panic attacks. He's ok racing outside of Europe but in Europe the stress from the expectations seem to affect him badly

Hopefully he feels better soon, either on or off bike
Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.

    Heart problems are scary things. Friebe says they date back to last year's Giro.

    Get well soon, Robert.

    Apparently he suffers from atrial fibrillation which is not endangering his health and it was known for very long and never a reason for him to not race. It did however give him panic attacks which affected his performance (mixed with the stress of high expectations). One instance of this was during last year's Giro where he left after the time trial. He will get surgery now and should be able to return to his previous level.

    For those who read Dutch, this is an interesting article about all the bad luck he had and how he never managed to live up to the expectations. It reads like an obituary though, which I think is a bit premature...

  • AF very much is a danger to health, it is linked heavily to stroke and requires someone to be on hefty anti arrhythmic medications, blood thinners such as warfarin (which would be too risky for a pro cyclist IMO) or be electrically shocked back to normal rhythm. It's not to be messed with. Hope he gets sorted.

    Let's hope this is the end of his problems, the sport needs more GC men and more importantly he needs to be able to continue his career.

    Gesink's surgery has been successfully completed and he is back on his bike. Great. I now wish to enquire as to why he is not on the start line at Belfast tomorrow. He is medically fit and so he has no excuse. Surely he must think of the fans! Therefore we can only assume the following;

    1. Gesink is lazy and has no regard for the sport of cycling or its fans and quite obviously lacks "le panache".

    2. Belkin are an absolute disgrace. They have a rider who has just been given the all-clear and he is not on the start line? Shambolic.

    All jesting aside, it is good to hear that his surgery went well and hopefully he will enjoy good health in the future, first and foremost. After that, hopefully he can return to cycling and achieve his potential. He is obviously a significant talent.
