I am having trouble fitting Conti GP 4000s ionto Pacenti SL 23's, has anyone else had problems? Any advice please.

  • Never hadroblems with gps myself but dont ave rhise rims. When trying to get the last bit of bead on have you gone round and pressed the tyre bead into the centre of the rim all the way round? Centre is a bit deeper so effective Dia for tyre to stretch over that last bit of rim is smaller? Could also try talc on the bead or a little washing up liquid to make it slide better (rinse of afterwards).

Yes, I have never had problems with these tyres before on other rims. It is the Pacenti rim I think!

Do it in a (very) warm room, or put the tyre (or wheel and tyre) in the airing cupboard for a while.

You're in trouble if you get a puncture and you can't re-fit your tyres, though...
    Red bikes are the fastest.

This video has been posted several times but it might help to refresh the principles of fitting difficult tyres (in this case a beaded Marathon Plus) or in your case a folding tyre onto difficult rims

    Thanks for the replies.
I had watched the video before posting, unfortunately to no avail. My problem is even if I get the tyre on, it is so tight I wouldn't want to have to do it at the side of the road!
Think I may try an alternative tyre brand, possibly a Vittoria Open Corsa.

Use a plastic tyre lever on the last bit as leverage. Try not to pinch the inner tube. Works for me every time.

Spoke to the OP today, tried the very tight Gatorskin hardshell on this rim and they are tight but doable. My hands are not that strong either. There is a knack to this though which the video posted does not show. It is something you just need to learn and the only way is persevering with the tight tyres on rims like this. If you can do this combo everything becomes easier.

I've never understood why these are not more widely known as they do the job with tight tyres.

Personally I find open corsas tighter than gp4000's, I can just get the 4000s on by hand but have to use levers to get the vittorias on. The trick is to make sure the tyre bead is in the center of the rim as you work the tyre over the edge.

    Thanks for all advice.
Ordered the Vittoria Open Corsa's which arrived today and....... went straight on, no problem just like all previous tyres I have fitted, easy. So happy days!

I've recently fitted Open Corsa's to my bike and they're great, easy to fit too :)
