Hello,

I've enjoyed checking out folks rides here over the years but never really had anything worth showing off (ive had a 3rd hand Bianchi for 12 years!). Until now that is. In January a friend of mine went to Bicycles by Design in telfords and built our own frames, he built a tourer and I built a road frame, both lugged Reynolds 853. Anyway Ive blogged it elsewhere if anyone is interested but the final product is below. They aren't the best pics but i''ll try and get some more soon. Bike spec and weight (you might be surprised) are after the pics:

Spec:

Frame: Lugged Reynolds 853 (brazed by my own fair hand)
Fork: Columbus Minimal Carbon
Groupset: SRAM Red (not 22)
Rims: Polished H Plus Son Archetype (with decals removed)
Hubs: Chris King R45 Silver
Spoke: Sapim CX Ray
Headset: Chris King
Bottom Bracket: Chris King
Stem: Thomson X2
Seatpost: Thomson Masterpiece
Handlebars: 3T Ergonova Carbon
Saddle: Selle Italia SLR Kit Carbonio Flow
Pedals: Time Xpresso 8
Weight 7.3kg

The headbadge is a combination of mine and my GFs initials (H&K), made out of polished stainless steel by a lady in the US.

  • Congratulations, lovely looking frame and I like the way the forks, although carbon, dont look out of place. You might want to check the accuracy of your scales though

Thanks xdoc, Argos in Bristol painted the bike and they did the forks for me as well, a really quality paint job.

I agree weight looks dubious but is 7.3 - 7.4 depending on fluctuations on the bathroom scales. However, i weighed every component separately before the build and again after the build (only thing not included is bar tape and grease) and it checks out.
  • good job and lovely kitted out.
Very classic and i'm pretty shocked by the listed weight.
    you must love it!

Looks great. I would love to see that paint job in the flesh.

Having built a number of frames in similar tubesets and specs, I am sure your bathroom scales are reading on the light side. No matter, you are right, it is surprising what a modern steel bike can weigh.

    Nice one.

Try weighing yourself and then yourself carrying the bike. The difference between the two weights might be more accurate. It's got to weigh a bit more than 7.3-7.4! Good effort with the DIY!

I think that won't be far off the mark though considering the other components.
