From Road to Dirt...which one?

I currently own 3 road bikes and absolutely love them. Recently, some of my fellow roadies suggested taking a ride on the wild side and try mountain biking. I used to ride BMX in the '70's and am not too sure if revisiting some of that painful trauma is in my best interests, but I am more than casually considering it. What would be a good mountain bike brand be? If I was in the market for something around $2,500-$3,000, what would be a good recommendation? Thanks in advance for the advice!
