Mine is pretty basic on the carrera, talking comfortable as in posibble Gel? Wouldn't know which is best or which material to be honest either.

Bontrager gel tape is good, various thicknesses to choose from. I went for the thickest they had in LBS and very pleased with it. Around £15 or so.

    +1 for Bontrager Gel Tape.

As a "belt and braces"exercise I also bought a pack of the Iso gel padding which is applied under the normal gel tape for that extra comfort factor.

Working great for me so far

Fizik tape on mine. Has always done the job well, large range too.

Bit on the pricey side.... Still trying to convince myself to treat the other two bikes !!!

Does anyone know any of a cheaper alternative ??
  • Zipp service course is fantastic. A lot cheaper than Lizardskins too...

This. Dumped lizard skin from both bikes and run the Zipp Service Course CX tape.

Yes, Arundel Gecko. Been using this a while now and it's great.

Plenty of alternatives then if this bontrager is not to my liking. Cheers folks.
  • This is excellent tape, with the gel inserts. No wrist ache at all in 2 years. The 4mm thickness version

    (For no logical reason)

Bar tape should always be Cinelli and black. Its not in "the Rules" but should be.
    Cinelli Gel is my preference.

...and remember it should always be wrapped with the flying C lined up along the top surface of the drops 8)
( as well as looking good it also ensures correct and even tension)

I've used the Bontrager Gel Cork and Ritchey Pro Cork bar tape. They're both very similar, look good and I find them both comfortable. Not too expensive either.

Last year I thought I would spruce the summer bike up with some new bar tape.

As bar tape is not that much of an outlay, I splashed out on some Zipp service corse.....looked great, comfortable, then delaminated and fell apart after a few months making the bike look dreadful.

I looked into another top line bar tape for this summer...Nothing took my fancy and I ended up with the cheapo coloured Ritchey corkas a stop gap.....all good so far....it certainly seems more useful as bar tape than the previous tape I used!

Tried to get the gel inserts when I ordered my bontrager tape but OOS. Quite fancy them to be honest, so may see if they have stock when I pick up. :-)

Just fitted the bontrager stuff. Bar ends a pig to get to stay in. Other than that, feels very plush I must say.

It's been said, but "Double wrap...."
    Fi'zi:k bar gels also help,
and asI wasn't sure how the gels were going to work over the top of original tape i went for cheapo' BBB Cork Race Ribbon Bar Tape, as it was the colour I wanted and I didn't mind if it didn't work out, but it's great nice and grippy and cushioned to boot... (came up a little short however due to the gels and double wrapping so consider that if double wrapping on Gels..

It was a belt and braces job as I was getting numb hands, but has worked a treat...

Another vote here for Arundel Gecko, fantastic tape and not a silly price either.
