Recommend me a rear tyre - or tell me to save my money!

I've been riding my new bike (whyte 901 hardtail) for about 5 weeks and while I love it generally, the rear tyre is annoying me on climbs particularly. It's a maxxis crossmark 27.5 x 2.1 60tpi folding bead that came with the bike, at the pressure it came on the bike.
It is slippery as hell on roots and this arvo was spinning on only slightly damp limestone bedrock sections. Even worse it clogs up with mud and turns into a slick very easily. So should I buy a new tyre or play with dropping the pressure to start off with, as I don't have a pressure gauge I'd have to get one of those to do it accurately? I don't want to go super low pressure as some of where I ride is very very rocky.
The reviews of the tyre are bad which makes me think it's worth looking at something else, but then again it's nearly summer so I'm living in hope of stone baked tinder dry trails where I guess the tyre would be great.
If it is worth getting a new tyre what should I get? Nothing to expensive, something for all round trail/xc riding. When I used to cycle I never changed my tyres all year and I will probably continue in that mould once I've got a set up I'm happy with.
P.s the front tyre is a maxxis ardent, all the bike reviews said it was awful but it's been fine for me.

it sounds like its not suited for the type of terrain you cycle on. The Ardent is more of a hard pack tyre too.
you could put the ardent on the back and fit a hans dampf or trail king protection on the front. buying from Ze Germans is fairly cheap.

I'd be tempted to put the Ardent on the back and get something grippier for the front, not a Hans Dampf though as I think it's too big for a hardtailYT Wicked 160 ltd

I love my hans dampfs on my Bfe, combined with the steel frame they make for a super comfy ride, though they did little to tame the jackhammer also known as my old 456c!
I'd stick the ardent on the back and go for something like a Hans Dampf or high roller up front0 -
Thanks for the suggestion, never thought of putting the ardent on the back, reviews online suggest way better as a rear tyre too so it makes sense.0
