Got a bit of cash recently, so I decided a new frame was in order, got this 2012 alpine frame for what I consider to be a reasonable price, considering the condition it's in (almost spotless). Just started building it up today, probably be finished tonight, but I thought I'd stick a quick preliminary snap up :)

don't think that's neon green like yours is it? Looking forward to the build, but be prepared for the haters. I love the alpine160's was a toss up between one and a five am for me, plumped for the five in the end as it suits my riding slightly better. What's the spec looking like
  • Looks like a substantial bit of scaffolding there, you having work done on the house?

Yep, it's neon green, I don't think he indoor lighting in mike's photos does it justice.
As for the haters, I couldn't care less. If it rides as good as I think it should, I'll be more than happy, nobody else has to ride it but me ;)

Aaaand she's done. Quickest build thread in bikeradar history?
Looking slack as balls, thanks to the angleset. Not sure if i'll keep that in or not, but i'm sure it'll be good for the student downhill champs in a couple of weeks. Also I think the forks are gonna need new bushings. Aside from that, seems sweet as!

Very nice. I don't get the haters. British bike, some of which are built in BritIn as well and the simplicity of a single pivot. What's to hate?

The price, some of the bumbling old fools that own them, the shoddy welds... in fact I'd go as far to say that all you reasons you gave not to hate them are reasons to hate them. They don't really appeal to me, but they do it for some people, I get that.

But enough of that, the worms are starting to crawl out the can!

Gutted I'm not gonna be at BUCS this year, it's localish to me this year at Caersws, but given how gnarly and stumpy that track is I'm kinda glad I'm too busy to go!

That's the main thing! :) It does actually look like a pretty fun bike, slack as feck! 8) The swingarms on the Alpine look a little less slab-sided than the 5 as well, certainly slightly better looking.

    Lovely Bike...

I do love Orange bikes, regardless of what anybody says about them.

When I change my mega, it will be for one of these. The single pivot design is just so simple and changing bearings in the frame is a very simple job.

I personally love the way they ride too!

Is 160 the max travel you can put on the front of one of these? or would 170 be acceptable do you know?

Cheers - yeah the reason i went for this is because i just missed the reliability of my old oranges. 1 pivot and it rarely wears out!
I've got 170mm on there now, they're warrantied for a max of 160mm, but i've seen others do it. I've not ridden it yet, but I may get out later this afternoon, so I'll report back after that.

Id be interested to hear.... the forks I want to put on the mega can be set to 150 or 170. But if I get an Alpine at some point I want to be able to keep the same fork. 150 will be too short though I think so id want to run them at 170.

I imagine it would be fine, they're pretty well built. I've got an angleset in mine, so any extra BB height gained from the extra travel is probably lost from the longer wheelbase, and it's super duper slack.

170 plus the angle set - hope the welds on the head tube are strong enough

I've never heard of anyone cracking/snapping the welds around the headset due to fitting an angleset. The extra travel won't hurt either, it's dual crown forks you want to be careful with because they're a lot stiffer. The steerer on my lyriks is gonna flex before anything happens to the headtube.
Anyway, I rode it this afternoon and decided the angleset needs to come out after the student downhill champs. It's too slack for anything but proper full on downhill.

Swapped the Zee mech for an SLX long cage as the cage on the zee wasn't long enough.
Still really liking this bike, done a few races on it now and a good few rides, tidy bike :) (not great up hills though)
