Whenever I put my phone in my back pocket I wrap it in a cut down sandwich bag to protect it from the sweat.

I am due an upgrade on my phone and would like one I can take pictures while I'm riding or something, are there any decent covers that work, or should I just get a shit PAYG phone to take out on rides...

Sorry... Lots of decent covers from very little money on eBay, when I'm at work, mine goes in a fully enclosed case with a thin screen over it and drop proof.

When riding I always have a bag in my saddle bag just in case. You never know when you will need a plasti bag :)

The new Sony Experias are waterproof. I've never used a bag and have been out in some shocking weather and never had an issue. My phone had come out of my pocket wet plenty of times but never enough to affect it

  • I use an Aquapac. If it's good enough to be immersed with me in the ocean, it's good enough for the back pocket!

Unless it is lashing it down just goes in an oakley soft case into the pocket, sometimes it goes in the bib shorts radio pocket. Heavy downpour and a long ride I use some freebie Zip bag thing I got in a mag

The sticking my phone in a bag thing is fine and works, but being able to pull my phone out of my pocket and take a picture while still moving (top of a climb, beautiful view etc) would be a huge bonus. That Sony phone is looking like a winner so far.

I use a waterproof "builders" phone, an ancient Samsung Solid Extreme. Small, waterproof, dustproof, massively shockproof (can be dropped a couple of metres or so onto concrete!!) , long battery life. No worries.

Vodafone keep telling me to upgrade it but there is simply no better phone available so I've kept it for years.

Commuting - smartphone in the pocket - if it's wet I'm wearing a water resistant jacket, if it's hammering it down then I may put it in a bag first ...
Normal riding - smartphone in the pocket - if it's wet then I've got a waterproof jacket so it's in there - if it's hammering it down then it's in a bag first ..

If it's not wet then it's just in my pocket ..

The Sony Z1, new Z2 and the coming Galaxy S5 are all waterproof certified. The HTC One M8 is water resistant, but isn't being advertised as such.

I use a cheap leather case I bought on ebay its not water sealed although i reckon it will keep my phone dry from most rain unless it falls in a lake or something.
  • I use one of the freebie zip lock style cases. Used to get them free at the Wiggle events in the goody bag and MBUK have given them away in the past.

Iphone in a clear freezer ziploccy bag in the back pocket. Its served me well over the years. (ok - many bags).

It might not be the rain that gets the phone - the sweat would be more corrosive.

I can use it fine when its in the bag and it doesn't make the phone any bulkier.

Sweat is corrosive to a mobile phone?

What do you sweat? Sulphuric acid?

Given your avatar, I'm guessing it's a Peter Griffin survivor?

I use one of these, about £7 from Evans and you don't need to take the phone out as the case allows touchscreen usage whilsst the phone is secure inside.

It also has a seperate inner plastic pocket for credit card and cash.

LOL - I'm no alien - but yep sweat is corrosive. Apparently sweat is almost as corrosive as sea water. Check out the stem bolts on any bike that's been on the turbo for any length of time.

Someone on here recommended breast milk storage bags. They are very good! Good size, waterproof, thick plastic, two seals on the Boots ones.

Best to use a new one rather than attempt to clean a used one though ;)

From wikipedia " Sweat typically is found at moderately acidic to neutral pH levels, typically between 4.5 and 7.0."

not really up there with sulphuric acid though!!

Surely it's the salt that's the main potential problem here? I guess minimal risk unless salt gets inside somewhere and encounters dissimilar metals.

This. Aquapac are great - no need to worry if it chucks it down.

I've known people to kill their ipods with gym workouts and sweat - for the sake of a plastic bag - i think its worth wrapping an expensive smart phone up. I've had headsets go rusty through running with them too.

    Jesus.

Sweat will not corrode a mobile phone.
