outer/middle chainring, what's the difference?

I want to buy a new crankset but just use one chainring. If I buy a triple chainset could I take the outer ring and move it to the middle position(and get rid of the 2 smaller rings). Or is the outer ring only designed to go on the outside?? Below is the set Im looking at. Thanks.

    That would require a longer BB axle for the triple and may still not give the best chainline. Is this for a single speed or just single front/geared rear? There are single ring square taper cranks available at sensible money (though I note CRC are out of stock of their cheapest Truvativ one).
