Carful when buying/using cheap frame protection tape.

Seen a post on here not long ago regarding frame protection tape from Aldi. Just thought I'd show you what happened to my frame when trying to peel the Aldi tape off.

Had been on my top tube for about a week but didn't like the finish it gave so out came the hair dryer to help peel it off. Came off OK but then I noticed that some of the lacquer on my frame had come away with the tape (all the way up the top tube).

Was gutted as this bike is only 3 months old and cost me quite a bit. Anyway as I used to detail cars as a bit of a hobby I decided to get my gear out and try to rectify the mess I'd made. After a couple of passes with a cutting pad and cutting paste, then a glaze followed by finished compound and a buffing pad (all done on a rotary machine) it ended up like this.

Not too bad but still not factory finish. Point to this story, spend a bit more and get decent protection tape not the cheap stuff

It's not only cheap tape that can do that, expensive tape can as well. It depends more on the frame/paint. I know some Nukeproof's and On One's are terrible for it.

Indeed 'cheap tape sticks to well' puts that idea in perspective, it's the frame coating not the tape at fault!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

You tried the Aldi tape then?
It's extremely sticky and a lot harder to remove than the helitape I also have on the frame which doesn't damage the lacquer.

Probably a mix of the tape and my frame. Have taken Lizard Skinz and Helitape off with no problems but this stuff pulled off bits of lacquer with it. Wont be using it again but if it's fine on yours go for it as it's cheap as chips

Helitape is by no means a universal product though.

I've got mine covering most of my underside tube , bottom bracket front frame area and still have plenty more from the strip .
