Decent USB rear light.

Apologies in advance, I've not used the search function. I'm after a new rear light, doing a Jogle in June and want day running lights. Only requirements are USB charging and a clip mount (for attaching to a carradice saddle bag) as seat post mounting not an option.

TIA

Just had a quick look at a moon shield on Ebay,

The description says 2hrs charge time for up to 6hrs of light.

Is that right...? Seems a bit naff. Think i'll be sticking with the batteries in my Smart Lunar.

its painfully bright, you can easily get a week out of one on lower modes.

Also it's painfully bright in daytime as well

Two charge for six light is a reasonable balance really, though I think I might be looking at alternatives to USB for a ride like that.

How supported is the ride - will there be someone driving your stuff for you? What is your expected ride time each day? If reasonably supported I would be tempted with a conventional battery powered light and carry a bagfull of batteries to go with it. The other option I would look at would be rechargables (eneloops) in a more conventional light.

USB is OK, but I wouldn't like to be sailing close to the run times when wanting the light on. with most USB lights, if the charge goes with an hour's ride left, you cannot readily swap battery.

Hi Paul, we're unsupported, there's two of us riding staying in b and b, hostels etc. I think we'll be on the road for about six hours a day as we're not rushing so the moon would probably be OK. I'm expecting to charge up overnight but I'm taking a tecknet 15000mha backup battery as well mainly for phone and garmin. I'm currently using a pdw radbot rear light with rechargeables but didn't want to have to lug the charger or spare conventional batteries. As I need USB power for phone etc anyway I thought USB lights would make sense. Given the time of year we're going we'll only need 'be seen' lights.
    Thanks

No problem - I'd be a little wary about getting the six hours - I have not read spec, but if a lower intensity is available, then it should be fine.

I would have a little think about how you plan to charge things - something like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFacWGBJ_cs might help if charging phones, lights, computers....

  • Knog blinder awesome light, everyone comments on its brightness

  • Reading the spec of the moon I think 6 hours is on the lowest setting, so it's right on the limit. I have a pdw fenderbot on the rear mudguard so could swap to that if needed as a backup light.

    Which one, there's hundreds! :D

I think a lot of the stuff they make is very, very good.

I dont think there's much between the two lights tbh in terms of light output, but I do think the Lezyne is more robust and more "stylish" (not that it really matters for a rear light)

I have and like the Moon Shield. My night rides are usually short, so I've never tested the maximum burn times, but according to this review:

    http://www.bikelightsreview.com/rear-li ... 60-review/

the lowest continuous setting should give you 5:40 and the flashing modes 7:00, times which are 'accurate to within a few minutes'.
  • Thanks for all the input so far. The Lezyne micro looks good but no it sure how I'd attach it to the saddlebag. The zecto looks just the job though?

    I've got the Zecto - it's great.

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

How long does it last per charge?

I get about 6 commutes of 40mins each with one charge used on flashing mode. I try not to let the battery run down though as it's the only light I have on the back.

I've got the Exposure Trace front, its a new model in their range and doesn't have all the fiddly batteries like the Flare.

Very tempted to get the TraceR. USB, battery indicator, very bright, on/off the bike in 10 seconds & solid build.
  • Looks a good light, I've got a Strada Mk5 and like their lights a lot, but I don't think it fits wthe bill re clipping onto the saddlebag? Looks like it would be pointing at the ground?

Just bought the Lezyne Zecto for my saddle bag. It seems a great fit and style.

I dont think anything attaches really well to a carradice. If you are wearing a helmet a light to that maybe better. The other alternative is to attach something to a bagman mount or rack if you are using either
  • I'm using the bagman mount, not sure how I would attach to this as the diameter is too small for most mounts?
