when I stop pedaling on my work commute bike the chain gathers and in short I think the wheel is knackered, my question is, it is an 8 speed bike, I have just recently taken of a pair of 10 speed wheels from the main bike, could I put an 8 speed cassette on this wheel so I can use it on the commute bike.
If it helps the bike is a carrera virtuoso 2007 8 speed and the wheels I'm thinking of putting on are Alex DC19??

I believe - if they're both shimano/sram or both campag then most likely yes - if mixed then no.
  • yes both are shimano

    Should work fine.

As an aside, if you can get the freehub body off the hub you might be able to sort it out by giving it a vigorous bath in a jar of white spirit, then immersing it in motor oil. I've had success resurrecting a few freehubs this way.

Should be OK, provided the spacing is the same (probably both are 130), but it will be very, very obvious if not.

I've just put some spare Fulcrum Racing 7s, previously on 105 10spd, onto a 7spd rebuild, with no problem at all. You may well need a spacer, though. These are very cheap, like £2 (Evans gave me one for free), butI should ask at your LBS to make sure you get the right one.

Note: Before you put on the new spacer, check if there's one already on (if the locknut doesn't thread then probably there is). It may not be obvious since it will probably stick to the wheel (just with old grease) when you take off the cassette. If there is one, just slide it off and put on the new spacer before the cassette.
