    After phoning a number of Halfords branches, I finally found someone who seemed reasonably confident that it's a 118mm standard SQ internal BB (sealed).

    The problem does not, is at this point, appear too serious: on one revolution of the crank at two positions ( r/side), I can hear what sounds like the ball bearings; l/side is quiet. There is no side play: everything appears tight. I only noticed this when the bike was fixed to its work stand; not when I was riding.
