Bike thicko here...
Hi all! New lad here. Looking for some help if possible.
A while back I wanted a road bike, possibly single-speed, but I also wanted a mountain bike... So I got a Hybrid (go figure!)
The bike I got was a Carrera Subway 1 for a nice £85 inc delivery to my door 2nd hand, but in good nick.
Anyway, cut a long story short; generally I been using this commuting to work daily with no problems. Let the mrs go out on it yesterday with the mother in law and wham, bang, crack... She's got the rear derailleur stuck in my wheel and it's all bent and generally f*cked!
I thought I'd use this as an opportunity to either upgrade the gears to single speed or something new and shiny. (Note - I only ever used the top 3 gears). I have since removed all the SRAM gears, wires, rear derailleur and am left with the crank, rear cassette and chain with the middle/front derailleur stuck on it! And here lies the problems which I would value your help with:
- The chain doesn't appear to have 'pins' as such, and for that reason I can't seem to split it.
- If I were to convert to single speed, what do I need to get? I see these conversion kits but how do I know what ones for my bike.
- Do I need to replace/remove/change the crank and pedal set? (I hope I'm getting the part names correct)
- Basically, I am clueless right now! Don't wanna spend much at all, looking for a budget replacement or single speed.

Converting a geared bike to SS has been covered many times on various forums. This thread might help:

If not Google something like "converting to single speed" and there will be plenty that come up.0 -
I thought that may be the response.
I was hoping for help with regard to my questions asked re: the chain... and what amount of teeth to have etc etc0 -

Difficult to advise over the internet. It depends on the number of teeth on the chainwheel (front), sprocket (back) and the length of your chain stays (different for every bike). You will need access to a chain splitting tool and buy a new split link to join it back up at the correct length. To do it all properly you will need something like these as well:

Is there no one you know who cycles who can help you with this? Failing that you will need to take it to a bike shop and tell them what you want.0
