Bike thicko here...

Hi all! New lad here. Looking for some help if possible.

A while back I wanted a road bike, possibly single-speed, but I also wanted a mountain bike... So I got a Hybrid (go figure!)

The bike I got was a Carrera Subway 1 for a nice £85 inc delivery to my door :) 2nd hand, but in good nick.

Anyway, cut a long story short; generally I been using this commuting to work daily with no problems. Let the mrs go out on it yesterday with the mother in law and wham, bang, crack... She's got the rear derailleur stuck in my wheel and it's all bent and generally f*cked!

I thought I'd use this as an opportunity to either upgrade the gears to single speed or something new and shiny. (Note - I only ever used the top 3 gears). I have since removed all the SRAM gears, wires, rear derailleur and am left with the crank, rear cassette and chain with the middle/front derailleur stuck on it! And here lies the problems which I would value your help with:

- The chain doesn't appear to have 'pins' as such, and for that reason I can't seem to split it.
- If I were to convert to single speed, what do I need to get? I see these conversion kits but how do I know what ones for my bike.
- Do I need to replace/remove/change the crank and pedal set? (I hope I'm getting the part names correct)
- Basically, I am clueless right now! Don't wanna spend much at all, looking for a budget replacement or single speed.

I am a bike thicko, please help.

Do you have a chain splitter? if not I would say knock a pin out ( it does have pins but once you knock it out you can't put it back) with a hammer and pin and just replace it with new chain and a power link for easy removal next time. You can pick up rear derailleurs pretty cheap on ebay if you wanted to get your gears back. As its a commuter you probably don't need anything fancy but as you have a SRAM system you will need to replace the rear with SRAM or the shifter will not be optimal/ work. You would probably need to spend way more to get a decent single conversion. Spacer kit for the rear hub and possibly redishing the wheel. Chain tensioner and a new chain. Then again I'm just guessing as I have never done it before, you could try the workshop section.

p.s. You might want to put those photos in another album unless you are meaning to share your whole album.

I'd have a look at the hanger the rear derailleur hangs off to see if it's bent. You'd want to know that to see why it went into the wheels.

The cranks and stuff should not have been affected.

As Bailsofhay has said you may need a chain tool to break the chain, you can either buy one separate or certain multi-tools have them (my topeak Alien has one)

When this happened to my MTB I replaced the rear derailleur with one I bought off ebay and the hanger as well which I got from a shop called Pedal On.
