First off as a cyclist

Good Morning.
New to the forum and new to road cycling too. Covered about 180 miles in the last month but today was the first off I have had 13 miles in to the 18 mile commute which I do a couple of times a month.
Basically I was cycling up a dual carriageway with a layby up ahead that people use to park in for car sharing. A car had overtook me but unbeknown to me had stopped in the left hand lane because the layby was full. I had been cycling at about 15mph with my head down (obviously looking up at regular intervals) but the next time I look up this car is stopped in front of me. No chance of being able to stop and ended up slamming into the back of it. Resulting in a pile of me and the bike on the floor
I was fine, bike was fine. Couple of little scratches on the guys boot but he wasn't bothered by it. He said he had seen me coming through his mirror and knew what was going to happen.
Obviously my fault for not looking where I was going but was a little shook up.
Anyone else had any near misses or minor accidents on the commute to work?
Will take today as a learning point.

Ah yes, look were you're going! I haven't done that as a cyclist, but numerous times when driving in intensely boring slow moving traffic, failed to notice traffic had come to a stop, no accidents but it shows what can happen if you're not paying attention.0

I was going down a steep hill, on a main road on my way into work, earlier this week. According to my Garmin I was doing about 35mph. Now, this hill is the downhill section of a large dip, and the speed down saves the legs on the way up the other side.
However, this time a school bus, 2 cars in front, leaves it quite late to signal and brake to pull in, right onthe fasted bit of the hill, and of course the cars behind pull towards the centre to try and overtake.
I have a good few seconds of 'Oh f*ck', as I braked hard, and managed to get around the but with no further problems!0 -
thank god you and the bike were ok. have a similar layby type area on a fast part of my commute and if anyone is in it i have to move more into the road. its not pleasant with cars whizzing past at 70ish but yea, eyes open and head up. in my opinion the driver shouldnt be parking on the side of the road. he wouldnt be there is it was a HGV behind him and not a bike!Cube Cross 2016

Cycling with your head down? I think a lesson learned.
At least you got away with it.You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.0 -

As far as I know I've destroyed two rear light clusters with handlebars. First time the driver pulled over in front of me, I had nowhere to go and landed in a heap on the pavement I ended up in casualty with a suspected broken arm (was fine). Second time I was chasing a 30 sign and kind of drafting the car I hit as it stopped at a zebra crossing, totally my fault, should have bailed onto the kerb when I had the chance.I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0 -

Taxi_adam, I did the same thing as a kid filtering in traffic. Broke my bike and face. The driver was a policewoman going home from work. She went flipping mental, examined her car minutely for scratches and then after giving me more abuse, drove off.
Carried the bike about two miles home where my mum nearly fainted as I was covered in blood from my nose.
Although I have come off loads of times since (all my fault) I have not repeated this one!Ecrasez l’infame0
