Evening all,
I am building on a budget. But alas I am not too hot at personal budgeting. I can run a ruthless business but when it comes to me and my stuff I'm just no good.
I have put a budget in place which I think will allow an xt double chainset, xt/xo shifters, xt front and rear Mechs, decent enough wheels and something like avid elixr 5s or formula rx/k24 oro brakes. Problem is, I really want xt spec brakes. Would you spend more on brakes and cut back on shifters and Mechs, or stay as it is? The difference between average and good costs a lot in brakes, but only small amounts in groupset so I'd get more bang for my buck by having good everything except brakes. But I want to be able to stop when I need to. Should I drop a level on everything to afford better brakes, or leave the brakes and keep the upper end running gear?
Alternatively, drag out the build even more to get everything I want but as I have no bike at the minute I want to push on with progress.
Cheers all. Struggling with perspective.
Rick

XT brakes are damn cheap at the minute anyway, and a lot better than Elixir 5. Front mech makes little difference overall, can downgrade here. Go for XT shifters at least. Mix and match is the best way. For me:
XT shifters
SLX rear mech
Deore front mech
XT or SLX brakes.0 -
SLX groupset from Merlin for £350.

Cheers guys. Appreciate the assistance. Should say, this is a budget build so second hand/eBay bits.
Useful info ref front mech, shifters etc. Basically, spend on brakes and sacrifice elsewhere.0 -
For me: slx chain set as its performance is the same as xt
Xt shifters
Slx rear mech
Deore front mech
Deore/ slx / xt brakes as tbh even the deore brakes are better than elixir 5s0 -

essentially, the shifter gives you your positiveness with your shift. i put XT shifters on my recent build, and notice quite a difference over the slx on my last bike. particularly the 'release' side of shifting.
you cant go far wrong with the recent slx brakes. its what i fitted, and they have been pretty good so far. XT are a bit lighter, and have a screw pin to hold the pads, rather than a split pin. theres not a great deal of difference in price.
front mech just shoves the chain sideways for want of another description.
rear mechs seem to get slightly more exotic materials and lightness the more you spend0 -
Hmmm. Is stuck 60 in the budget for 2nd hand brakes. New xts are 135 on Merlin. If I bump up my 60 budget to 100 I'll be there or thereabouts for a set which are new but not shop bought (no warranty but a little cheaper). To save that 40 I basically take 10 off rear mech, 20 off front and 5 off each shifter. Sound sensible?0

I went all XT on my build except for the brakes, where I went for Deore - they're a no-brainer, and there's hardly a compelling reason to get any better brakes unless you're racing.Specialized Roubaix Elite 2015
