Bad Drivers On The Road

Hello! Hope you don't mind me contacting this group - I'm working on a BBC1 programme about road safety/bad drivers and as cyclists often have problems with drivers I thought I would post a message. We are asking people to nominate their friends/family members who have picked up some bad driving habits - in return they'll be given some expert driving tips tailormade to their problems. If anyone knows of people who could benefit with some driving tips that they'd like to nominate then the email address to get in touch is drive"at"outlineproductions.co.uk. Many thanks for any help you can provide, it is very much appreciated.

Mrs HD and her daughter would be prime candidates although the pan to the head makes me think twice about nominating them.

Nominating friends and family for humiliation on national television sounds like a great idea, I don't know why more people aren't biting your hands off.

Fortunately we are looking to concentrate more on the giving people interesting/informative driving tips that they might not have heard before side rather than the bad driving itself as it's for BBC1, so humiliation isn't part of it! Hurray for that!

Why did you name your thread "bad" drivers if it's not about humiliating them?

A thread titled 'Bad Drives' is likely to get a lot more reading traffic on this forum than one entitled 'advanced driving tips for friends and family'?
  • I imagine that the vast majority of crap drivers we all meet as cyclists are strangers, thank god. I would nominate a good 10% of drivers that pass me every day like I didn't even exist.

If I nominate my wife I'll never ride again.

I've had 2 instances of "bad driving" with ppl I know - the first a colleague the second a neighbour.

The colleague pulled alongside my back wheel on a fast descent going into a 30mph and right hand bend - his excuse was that he was trying to encourage me to pedal faster - my response was along the lines of don't ever do that again because something may go wrong and you could kill me, there's only a few ppl I trust with my life and you're not one of them.

The neighbour did a late overtake and whilst he gave me plenty of room he forced the oncoming car to move over - my only comment there was "you're supposed to put your foot down when doing those sorts of overtakes" and the reply was along the lines of "yer, it doesn't respond quite as quickly as it should" .. in fairness to my neighbour it was a complete non-issue and was more a comment on the lack of performance of his car than anything else!

Yes unfortunately that's the way it works, sorry :( . Thanks very much all for your replies, and thank you for your suggestion oxoman about bad cyclists too! Do send an email if you know anyone who is a bit shaky on the road and needs some extra confidence.

Actually in fairness it's got nothing to do with the car's performance and everything to do with your neighbour not being able to take into account the performance of his car when considering doing the overtake. If he'd considered it, he wouldn't/shouldn't have overtaken.

It was one of those marginal situations where nobody is in any real danger, nobody was put out, nobody was hurt and nobody complained - I only mentioned it to him as I got home just after he did, he could've pulled in a little earlier and still not cut me up or he could've waited another 30 seconds till I'd rounded another corner and he would've had another opportunity to overtake - assuming it's clear.

He does pass me quite often and that's the first and only time I'd seen him do something even slightly dodgy .. :)

Guess we all see rubbish driving whenever we're out. I was out on Sunday and had a black Merc pass me way too close. Did nothing other than think to myself the driver was a bit of knob. About a mile further on the same Merc had piled into the back of a car... Know it's wrong but it cheered me right up....

I had someone today who overtook a car as it was overtaking me, the car nearest me swerved to the left when he saw what was going on, luckily the road was just wide enough for us all, well me, to escape unharmed!

I'd nominate the Travellers Rest coach driver who decided to overtake when there was an oncoming vehicle thus giving me about one metre on the narrow road between Low Wood and Ambleside yesterday morning, but as I don't know who it was...

But good luck with getting nominations - I find that people take the accusation of being a bad driver about the same as they do being called overweight or lacking a sense of humour.

how about take 50 pensioners on a driving test. Make sure the route is littered with cyclists and see how many can pass the test. That would make good viewing and maybe force the gov to change the laws. ;)
