I'm not a huge fan of Schwalbe tyres and their massive volume but im off to Italy next month to ride some very rocky dh tracks and im thinking that a bit of extra tyre volume might help save my rims from getting dented.
Am I right in thinking that the trailstar snakeskin double carcass is the sticky and tough downhill version?

according to this the vertstar is the stickier one, http://www.mtb-news.de/news/2011/09/29/ ... -compound/

VertStar is indeed the stickier version - Double Defence SS is the toughest carcass.

Thanks. After reading a ropey translation of that article I think I would actually sacrifice a little grip for less resistance. Its definitely going to be worth it for the long tracks and even places like bike park wales where it's a bit flat.

I'd get the Super Gravity Magic Mary's, slightly faster rolling, should be just as tough and a smidge lighter. A lad at uni's running them on his M9 and had no issues so far.

I would get Magic Marys but found an unused set of muddy marys on ebay stupidly cheap.

Fair enough! I had a set of the freeride Muddy Mary's in 2.35 and they were huge, bigger even than my Hans Dampfs. The Vertstar compound was ruddy sticky as well! Huge amounts of grip

Im not a big fan of huge volume tyres but I have destroyed three rear rims in a year. Mavic XM721 rims are as dent resistant as any dh rim.
I'm hoping that bigger tyres will help save my rims in the Dolomites.

How long are you going to be riding for? My brand new Muddy Mary Trailstar 2.5 looked like this after only one day riding push up at Innerleithen.

I've never had any other tyre do that in such a short space of time so I wouldn't expect them to last longer than a day or two if you're riding lots of rocks. They're also no bigger than 2.5 Der Kaiser's or 2.7 Minion's IME. What tyre's are you running just now?
