Grinding Brake Pads.

I've just fitted a new front wheel and when riding to work this morning (it's first ride) the brake was grinding really bad and even looked to have shaved some metal from the brake surface (there were a couple of curled up bits of metal like you get from a lathe on the pad).
Is this normal for a new rim? The front brake has always been a little iffy in feel from new with the old wheel in but nothing too bad. Not sure what the pads are as they were on the bike when I bought it (Forme Longcliffe with Forme brake callipers). The old wheel had a Mavic CXP 22 rim and the new one is a Vision Team 30. I haven't fitted the back wheel yet so don't know if the same will happen.

Check you haven't got grit in the brake pads, if so pic it out.0

Rims can be different widths so you need to reset the pads anyway and yes - check if you've got grit in the pads - if braking has always been a bit naff why not replace them with something a bit better0

I think there must have been something on the brakes that seems to have nicked the braking surface which has then resulted in these shards of metal coming off.
I had a look at lunch and cleaned the rim up and there are some little nicks in the surface now and it's quite rough.mi also dug out a good few bits of metal from the pads so if I didn't before, I need new pads now. Just hope the rim will be ok as I've only done 2 miles on it!
Is it alright to use a bit of fine wet and dry on the braking surface to smooth it over or wire wool?0
