Where do you tend to get your childrens helmets from?

Evening all,

my little 7 month old will soon be thinking of taking her first ride (Once she can support her head 100%) in either a rear Yepp seat on our Kona Minute, or in a rear trailer.

I have found this on Halfords and have reserved a pink square one for local delivery:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_978668_langId_-1_categoryId_228868

So if it is too big or whatever, it's free returns, but just wondered if anyone had any specific makes and models they had had success with?

    Local bike shop.

We've always done that so we can try them on - it's not just the raw 'size' - but different manufacturers have different 'shapes' so some will suit some heads better than others.

We started out with a Netti Pilot, and then went to ByK ones (local Australian kid's bike manufacturer).

For what it's worth, I think the Laser Bob helmet is hard to beat on the tiny ones.

I also use the LBS so that I can check the fit and sizing. From memory, my boys all started with the MET Buddy or Super Buddy at that age, which worked well for them. They're not the cheapest but, if you think helmets help - and they've certainly taken some bumps - you probably don't want to go for the cheapest anyway!

  • When I was in Halfords the other day buying one for my son, I noticed quite a few that had no adjustment other than additional pads.

All the helmets he tried on where the same size on the label but they differed so much once he tried them on.

Most important is that he/she chooses it.

My 3 yo likes the one his older brothers passed down so problem solved. The older kids (11 and 14) have to wear helmets for cycling to school (that's the school rule apparently) and borrow whatever's lying around that I or my wife bought at some point for rides that insist on them. Clipped to their bags until about 100m from the gate.

TBH most helmets will protect from a low speed fall for the first few months of learning. After they can stay upright, can't really see the point, other than for races or off-road.

We got a Raleigh helmet for our lad when he was 9 months or thereabouts. It was a few cm smaller than the helmets in halfords and other shops. It fitted him well but he soon learnt how to take it off. While sitting in his child seat he'd casually take it off and drop it on the floor. It would end up fastened to the back of the seat. Guess good fit is not enough.
