I was going to buy a Orange RX9 frame set for commuting, light off road and touring using the components from my Tifosi. Whilst waiting for the RX9 to become available as frameset only I picked up a Surly Disc Trucker 700c.

The bike has changed a fair bit since I got it, only original parts are...
frame, bars, front wheel, rear rim + spokes, Tubus rack and mudguards.

I added crosstop levers as I'm used to flat bar mountain bikes and it gives me extra hand positioning options, I also have crosstops on my Tifosi road bike.

I started changing the finishing kit from the random collection of parts used (the previous owner works in a bike shop) to black Hope components and changed the odd bits of groupset that didn't match to black 105 5701/3.

I fitted 5703 Sti's in place of the Dura Ace 9700 downtube shifters I did fit 5603's but prefer the cleaner looking cable routing of the 5703s. I changed a new R565 black triple as it had a worn silver Sora triple with the granny ring removed. To try the triple setup I borrowed the cage and spring from a old deore lx rear mech to take up the additional slack but I have since fitted a new 5701 GS mech and 5703 front mech as the old ones B pivot kept sticking.

I rebuilt rear wheel using a Hope Hoops branded Pro 2 32 hole hub after checking the difference in spoke length between than and the Shimano 529 hub being .5mm. I haven't decided on a front hub yet, Hope QR or a Dynamo with a B+M E-Werk or Supernova Plug for charging things when camping/touring (Garmin/Phone) though the E-Werk might be able to charge my lights as well.

Salsa crosstop levers would be nice to complete the Hope/Salsa finishing kit.

The only downside is that such bike really needs a triple chainset. I can't see you going up a slope fully loaded with a 39 x 28

It has a triple. The worn out 50x39 Sora was what the bike came with but I changed to a R565 triple. The front mech was designed for a compact though it shifted fine I've replaced it with the triple version.

Changed back to Vittoria Randonneur Pro 35s as kept getting punctures from tiny glass fragments with the Smart Sam 35s and the last one caused a blow out that ripped the tyre.

I've just fitted new front and rear mechs, chain and 13-30 Tiagra cassette, thought I'd get a cheap one to see if I like the new ratios. The "loose" sprockets in the 105 cassette have really bitten into the Hope freehub body, I had to use two chain whips to remove the 4th sprocket. Think I'll need to change to a steel freehub body next cassette change (by "loose" sprockets I mean the ones not on a carrier or fastened together).

I have new XTR cables and bar tape to fit but waiting for my PDW TakeOut bar bag/basket to see if I need to move the crosstops first.
Thinking of swapping to my spare M4 caliper for extra stopping power when loaded.
Going bike camping for the first time over easter.

Needed a bigger cassette for tackling hills when fully loaded whilst touring, upgraded cassette to HG81 11-34T, chain to SRAM PC1071 120L with a KMC reusable missing link instead of the SRAM single use PowerLock and rear mech to XTR RD-M972 SGS.
Fitted a Gilles Berthoud Galibier leather saddle in black with Ti rails. Need to order the Berthour "Rub-ber" saddle cover instead of a carrier bag I use if its parked up in case of rain.
Looking for better Hope calipers, My X2s have less power than my old Avid BB7s.
Defiantly needs a steel free hub body as the Tiagra cassette was a nightmare to remove and it hasn't even broken 1000 miles. Shame Hope don't make a Ti freehub like they did for the XC/Bulb/Big-Un.
Waiting to see what the durability of the SRAM chain is like for durability otherwise I'll upgrade to a KMC X10e EPT as I need a 118 link chain might fit 116 links at a push, 114 is too short. The X10e EPT has 136 links as its designed for e-bikes with a mid motor.

Managed to get a pair of Hope Mono 6 calipers. So I've fitted a Mono 6 with a 20mm Avid CPS mount on a Mono 6Ti 185mm rear disc as the front brake and now it stops really well.

The X2s worked but weren't strong enough if I needed to stop quickly. I was probably asking a bit too much from the little X2 calipers to stop with me, plus panniers etc. Although the Avid BB7s did have similar power to the Mono 6 but the way they were set up they were more on/off, the Mono 6 has much better modulation.

I'll fit the spare Mono 6 to my Orange Evo2 in place of it's "No5" M4. I might fit that M4 with a 160mm disc as the back brake on my Surly, that or one of my spare Mono Minis and then sell the x2 calipers.

I have a NOS Kona Project Two fork coming to replace my Surly fork that is a little bent back after a low speed impact. It's the Canti/Disc 700c version, but I have some Hope M8 hose guide/blankers I can use instead of the canti studs.
