1: Speed, distance, time, cadence, grade, elevation, calories, heart rate
2: Heart rate, HR %max, calories, %HRR, HR zone
3: Vert. speed, grade, distance, speed
    4: Cadence, speed, elapsed time
5: Temp, time of day, GPS accuracy

    I'm just a data freak

Forerunner 910XT (4 data fields per screen)

Screen 1: Heart Rate, Speed, Distance, Cadence
I use this >99% of the time

Screen 2: Activity Time, Average Heart Rate, Training Effort Score, Average Speed
    Only used for occasional reference

Screen 3: Time of Day, Elevation, Max Speed, Heart Rate Zone
Reference only and rarely used (therefore 2 button presses from Screen 1)

Screen 4: Heart Rate, Speed, Gradient, Cadence
Same as Screen 1 except distance is replaced with gradient. Occasionally use this screen on climbs but gradient data is of limited accuracy and use

This is from memory but I think I've got it correct!

I'm surprised people have time of day. This always seemed pointless to me. I know when I start my ride and I know how long I've been riding. I also plan my routes before hand so know how long I will be ouT and therefore roughly when I will get home. This stat therefore seems surplus to requirement.

When you've been giving it the beans up and down big hills then simple arithmatic can be pretty tough!! :o

And what about rides when you may have stopped for coffee, lunch, puncture repair, wait for slower riders or just to admire the view?
Seems absurd not to have time of day easily to hand unless you're stuck for space.

How about easily to wrist instead?

Although ToD is one of the fields I have showing - for convenience rather than anything else.

The only watch I wear is the Garmin itself (910XT triathlon watch) but when I'm on the bike it's on an out-front mount.

I can afford a watch as well as the GPS so I make sure I wear the watch ... can't have ppl thinking I'm poor ... ;)

I have a watch, it's my Garmin and it has GPS too, so there. Anyway, I think it's reasonable that I should expect my watch to display time on it somewhere! The original criticism of displaying time of day was that it was redundant for a spurious reasons. Surely wearing a separate watch when you have time on your computer is even more redundant?! Also having both an Edge and a Tri watch that can do all the same functions, and then some, would be redundant.
I also have another nice conventional watch lying around somewhere but I stopped wearing that years ago. My phone now does that job - yes we're back to pocket watches....

Gradient isn't much use in Cambridgeshire!

I setup screen one that I use most of the time:
Speed, Time, Distance, HR, Lap Time (auto lap set every 3 miles) Cadence, Time of day & Direction

Then screen 2 if I hit a climb (which isnt often, and the data is usually very inaccurate)
    Altitude (which is usually wrong)
    V.Ascent
    V.Decscent
    Grade
