Trek Domane 6 series Project One

Recently took delivery of my new summer bike, a Trek Domane 6 series Project One. Specified with Ultegra 6870 Di2 but then upgraded crankset, front derailleur, cassette and brakes to Dura Ace 9070 di2, along with the wheels to Dura Ace 9000 C24 TL (Ultegra bits went on my Winter bike).

Put on Dura Ace 9000 pedals (trying out +4mm ones) and Zipp titanium skewers to get weight below 7 Kg and ended up with final weight of 6.92 Kg with pedals, cage, barfly mount and duotrap sensor (6.6 Kg without pedals, etc.)

Left the Ultegra Rear Derailleur on as the DA one is very expensive and it might be useful to be able to put my winter wheels on with a 11-32T cassette if heading for a 20% incline! Also stuck with Ultegra levers as the DA are £400! Both RD and Levers are the easiest to damage in a fall.

Unfortunately, I haven't ridden it yet, because as soon as it was ready I had a stroke and ended up in Hospital! Not the best timing.

I'm not allowed to ride at the moment as my vision is still disturbed on the left side, so cycling outdoors could be dangerous unless it improves sufficiently. Might get a turbo to keep my fitness up and try it out indoor.

    GWS! The more I see these Domane project ones, the more I like them. I keep playing with the site and coming up with black/yellow/orange bikes that look rather nice indeed!

  • Very nice and light bike. I sometimes envy you who are not so tall because the geometry of the bikes is so much nicer in the small and medium frame sizes (up to 56).

    Curious about the rear derailleur. I didn't realise the Ultegra 6870 was available in a long cage version which can handle a 32t rear cog. After suffering on some 20% climbs in the Dales last year I can see the point of a 32 rear on some rides!

    It's new for 6870, there are SS and GS Rear Derailleurs with small and medium cages. Dura Ace 9070 is SS only.

    There is a small weight penalty, not so much on the derailleur (c.10g) or chain, but the 32T cassette is 37g more than the 28T.

    I found 18-20% quite scary on 28T, as the front wheel was starting to lift off the ground. The Domane has a mildy up right riding position, I like to stay sat down on long climbs and I prefer to keep a reasonable cadence, so I reckoned a 32T would be a good option when it got really steep, and going from 10 to 11 speeds gave me a free gear anyway!

    I'm happy with 28T up to around 15% or so, well when I say happy ...
