Got a short break coming up in the North York Moors near Pickering (Cropton Forest). Not sure which bike to take and can only take one of road, mtb or cx.
Any opinions?
Prob wouldn't go to Dalby on the mtb as prefer the natural stuff.
Quite keen to thave a go at Rosedale Chimney
I hear there's some good singletrack in the Rosedale Abbey area - too techinical for the cx?
Seems to be an abundance of bridleways and forest tracks which would be good for cross.
Cheers

When are you going. End of April for me
Cropton has MTB bikes for hire so perhaps you could take the roadie and hire a MTB?0 -
The moors has some great Mtb riding, the only issue is you need to know where it is and then find it. I ended up buying a Gps to find the good stuff in the end! There is some good stuff around Rosedale and the old railway near Blakey. The other issue with the moors is the weather dictates the ride. If its wet it can be a nightmare as you can spend a lot of time in bog! IF it's raining AND windy, it is tough going! I have begged for the end numerous times on those moors biking into a head wind and pouring rain!
Roadie riding is great also, chimney bank is a challenge, Blakey bank also. Personally I would judge it by weather. If it's wet, roadie, dry and you do your research to find the good bits, take the fat wheels!
Don't even consider the CX!0 -
This area is where I'm from originally - North York Moors is really superb for MTBing - The bridleways are empty of other MTBers in my personal experience (mainly winter though). I have just a 80mm travel hard tail and have never had any probs in the lovely XC rides. Full Rosedale circuit from Cropton is really excellent but there are also masses masses more fantastic rides.
These websites have lots of rides and are really useful resource:

Road cycling is also lovely - lots of very quiet and tiny lanes, some incredibly steep hills, and many cute villages with nice pubs and cafes. Roadying seems to be becoming quite popular (well, compared to Aberdeenshire!) in the area so I'm guessing the vehicles are hopefully becoming quite "bike-aware" too.
Personally, when I visit the area, I always take my MTB and not my road or cross bike (although I sometimes borrow a road bike for a quiet jaunt from the house). I agree with CX being the least preferred option!
You'll have a wonderful time in this hidden gem corner of England whichever bike you take.

Just a belated thanks for your responses.
I took the mtb and possibly did what Lucy calls the full Rosedale circuit from Cropton Forest (north through the forest, across some moors and down road to Rosedale abbey, then a bridletrack out of the village along the valley. It was freakin' awesome especially the last section going south out of Rosedale Abbey. Didn't see a single other rider despite good weather on a Sunday. Bliss.
On the Monday I did the half of the red track around Dalby. Possibly a bit too rocky for my liking but good fun nonetheless.0
