I started off with the peaked helmet, and you're right- they do keep the sun and rain off nicely. However, when riding on the drops it got in the way of my sight, and eventually snapped and came down like a medieval knight's visor! I ripped it off completely after that.

I've found that the edge of my helmets since keep the sun off OK as I keep them sitting relatively low, but isn't much good for the rain. This January I relented and bought a cycling cap to keep the rain out, and again the same problem of not being able to see when on the drops- but at least you can flip it up out of the way when you want to get serious- even if it is less comfortable like that.

If like my MTB helmet, a road helmet is a bit more recessed and the cap flips up better and is comfy.
