New set of wheels for road bike

I currently ride a Cannondale Synapse 105 (2013 model) which came with Shimano RS10 wheels. I've had the bike for just over a year and am now looking to upgrade the wheels to a new all-rounder set which will be lighter, more aero dynamic and help give me the extra little improvement out on the road that I need.

I am tall (6feet 2 inches) and very slight (weigh in at just under 11 stone / 70kg). I currently go out on fairly flat 40-50 mile rides, but over the next few weeks I will be increasing that to around 60-70 miles plus, as I'm building up for the Etape Eryri (Snowdonia) Mawr which is a gruelling 103 miles ride around Snowdonia taking in around 5,500 feet of climing. I am therefore looking for something that will both aid my training for the Etape, and also assit me on the day as I'm going to need any extra bit of help I can get my hands on!!!

I'm looking at spending around £450 - £600, but if I'm honest I'm struggling to work out what's best as there's so much out there, and every shop I've been into they just want to try and talk me into buying whatever wheels they have in stock at the time.

Can anyone guide me in both what to look for in a set of wheels that would fit my bill, and also maybe suggest some wheels that would be suitable?

Thanks in advance for any help and guidance offered!

And change for a nice bottle of wine. Job done.
  • Thanks - quite a few people have recommended the Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels, but opinions range from the Elite S model to the Elite SLS which seems a bit steep for what I'm looking for.

Have you ordered previously from 4thebike.de as I'd always be nervous ordering from foreign sites, but they seem to be a lot cheaper than UK-based stores such as Evans (http://www.evanscycles.com/products/mav ... t-ec054091)

What aids training is a heavyish set of wheels not light racing wheels!

I have some RS80 Shimano's which are great ! Light, fast and relatively aero!

However in hindsight I would have bought...

These wheels are what I would go for, I know people with them and they rave about them, really light for the hills and absolutely bomb proof for training.

If you could stretch your budget slightly (you can get these for £680 online), these are the stars of the show! These are the dogs dangly bits, you can run them tubeless (no inner tubes with special tyres) or you can run them with tubes. Really light and really strong.
I've got american classic victories for training and i love them! Ive raced on their carbon tubular wheels as well in the past and love them too. They are my picks and would suit your needs perfectly!

Yes, I have ordered from them. Excellent service. I bought Mavic Ksyrium Elites. Shipped to my door in a few days. Euro 380.

No, there are no additional taxes. They are in the EU.

If you liked your RS10's then give the Shimano RS81 wheelset a look. I use RS80 (same as RS81 but 10 speed) in the summer and RS10 in the winter, and the RS80 is a massive improvement. You can get a set for £350 which is under your budget for the C24 models. But you can get versions with deeper rims if you're wanting to go more aero.

I love my Campy Zonda, don't forget to budget for some decent tyres too :)
