Spoke protector (Dork Disc removal)

Hi, I've just taken ownership of my Bianchi, but it has the spoke protector on the rear wheel.

I feel it spoils the look of the bike quite a bit. Is is completely necessary for it to be there?
Will I some how damage the wheel if I remove it?

    The dork disc isn't needed and removal won't cause any damage as long as the rear derailleur limit screws are set properly.
