disc rotors advice

Looking into building a CX bike (probably a kinesis crosslight pro6 disc) so busy spec'ing components. Looking on the Fatbirds website at BB7's, they seem to have "road" versions with either HS1 or G2CS rotors. I'm sure I've bought G2CS rotors in the past for a MTB with Avid Juicy discs. Out of the 2, which might be better for road/light cx use?

I'm running both pairs on different bikes - TBH I've never noticed the difference

Thanks - I note the G2CS is called a "clean sweep" rotor, presumably for an improved ability to shed mud (might be useful on a crosser...)
Any views on whether Spyres (or even tektro's) are worth looking at? Would be used with a SRAM Apex set up and see that the Avid BB7s are referenced as being compatible with Apex, Rival and Force (although probably because they're owned by the same company)?

THere is a lot of nonsense around rotors... the truth is that they are all the same... don't get super thin ones which will warp, otherwise they are all the same... floating/non floating... drilled, non drilled, wavy, straight round... no difference

Best cable disc brake is the TRP HYRDs - I have a couple of bikes running BB7s but a mate fitted some HYRDs to replace his BB7s and reckons they're a huge improvement. The relaunched Spyres should be good too with a dual piston design.

To say there is no differece is not quite true. You have to push the limits of the brakes to find the differences most people don't so they are all the same. I certainly don't push the limits of my MTB brakes living where I do.

Thanks for the responses (and apologies for my late reply) had been looking at another frame set which already had callipers fitted but decided it would be too large, so am back on the Kinesis Crosslight Pro6 disc build again.

I must admit, I had thought the TRP HYRDs were hydraulic brakes :oops:

I shall investigate further....

EDIT: at almost a £100 per brake for the TRPs I might stick with BB7's as can buy a "road" set for just over the same price. Gonna have to budget for the initial build unfortunately.

2nd EDIT: or some TRP Spyres at 130 a set.

is it normal for callipers to come with the rotors?

I find that discs with a circular edge much better than wavy ones. I reckon its because the disc is distorted with most cable brakes and a true circle does grab so much. Most definitely something I feel on my BB7's although much worse on my utter s***e Tektros

i find the spyres on my CDF good, they came with rotors and all fittings, bear in mind that the 1st lot were recalled - the new version is a lot better and the brake lever pull is much less

Thanks Ben16v. Is there a risk that pre-recall Spyres are still being sold online? How would I tell if the ones due to turn up on Monday are the new version or not...?

i bought mine (slc version) via fatbirds and the recall was done via upgrade bikes who are the distributor, best message them, cheers

Thanks xdoc. Have replied. Bought TRP Spyres in the end, then became aware about the recall. Westbrook just confirmed to me that their current stock is the improved version 2. Should arrive today. Happy days...
